Trafalgar Smoked Oatmeal Stout

Pours a deep brown with strong garnet highlights, and no head at all. Smells strongly strongly smoky, like jerky or smoky meat. Way too strong really. Flavour is pretty thin, and again, way too much smoke. Not much else present at all. Mouthfeel is really thin and watery, and there’s no carbonation hardly, which is not that appealing in this beer. All in all, way too much smoke, and nowhere near enough body. Fairly poor, really.

Bouteille de 650 ml dégustée en compagnie de Rastacouere, Glouglouburp et Cathschlag. Arôme: Odeur de malt torréfié avec une pointe fruitée. Apparence: La couleur est noire opaque. Présence d’un mince col mousseux et d’une fine dentelle sur le verre. Saveur: Goût de chocolat et de fruit sûrette. Durée moyenne de l’arrière goût. Palette: Le corps est moyen avec une texture légèrement minérale. Moyenne effervescence en bouche. Arrière goût légèrement fruité. (Rating #1371)

Pours an opaque dark ruby brown with no head. Aroma was light malt, some coffee. Palate was thin, flavour was underwhelming. Some coffee tones. Slight bitterness in a watery finish. Not offensive, but not likely a repeat buy.

Bouteille 650ml, courtoisie de Hogtownharry. De couleur noire-oruge et claire. Nez de malt rôti doux, léger de chocolat (légèrement lactique) et de houblon floral avec des notes de café, d’épices (muscade) ainsi que des traces métalliques et de fumée de bois. Mince en bouche avec un pétillement moyen-fort et une texture légèrement crémeuse et aqueuse. Notes de chocolat au lait (légèrement lactique) accompagné de faibles notes épicées (muscade) ainsi que de traces d’un goût rappelant le beurre ors de l’entrée en bouche suivi très rapidement d’un goût moyennement amer de malt rôti ainsi que de notes de chocolat noir puis en finale l’on retrouve un moyen goût de café sucré accompagné d’un léger goût de houblon herbeux (notes florales) ainsi que des notes de noix asséchantes et de fumée de bois. Post-goût moyen et aux notes sèches, moyennement amer de rôti (petites notes brûlées) avec un léger goût de café et de houblon herbeux ainsi que des notes de chocolat et de fumée (traces métalliques).

Bottle. Sampled at BeerBistro, 2007 Golden Tap Awards. Opaque reddish-brown, with a tiny off-white head. Smells sweet and cheap, like root beer syrup, some green hops. Taste - like stale cola, dry stale hops and weeds - bleah. Syrupy and still with a bitter, slightly nasty aftertaste. Not very good - avoid.

650ml Bottle: I promised myself no more Trafalgar but couldn’t help but add a stout to the ratings. Pours red-black, zero head. Aroma is quite mild, but there’s some definite roasty malts coming through. Pleasantly, none of that "Trafalgar smell".. you know what I’m talking about. The flavour.. well, it’s not bad. Nice enough, good roastiness, albeit not too complex. I’m fairly sure there’s no oatmeal to be found, it’s extremely light in texture and mouthfeel. But, no nasty sour Trafalgar taste.. for that, commendations. I drank a glass and used the rest to poach a pork roast. Seriously, it was nice. A bay leaf and a little rosemary, garlic and onions in the gravy. Try it.

650 mL bottle. Almost no head at any point. Smoke is there in both aroma and flavour, but not in a strong way. Thin, a little fruity sweet, and although the smoke is a nice touch, there is not enough roast flavour.

Dark black in colour with minimal dissipating head. Smells of smokey roasted oats, with a hint of chocolate. Tastes a bit watery with smokey meat kind of aftertaste. Pretty watery in consistency.
