A funky farmhouse ale, set ablaze with hops from the Pacific Northwest. Inspired by the hop-focused West Coast craft brewers, and the dry and refreshing saisons of Belgium, this ale blends a spicy and fruity yeast character with vibrant and pungent hops.

Crown Beer Fest: Very juicy aroma of mango, pineapple and melon along with biscuit and grassy notes. Not much wild yeast character outside of faint horseblanket. Also very subdued Saison character too. I would be more likely to call this a Belgian IPA more than anything... I will also call this very yummy for what it is. Very new world.

Draft on tap at Small Bar Division (Chicago, IL). Ran into a couple new ones here. Pours a hazy darker golden hue overall, some brightness and firm glow even in this dark light. Frothy whitish head atop stays as a decent layer, ok stick around and lacing. Aromas are significant fruity vibes, juicy pineapple and citrus meet some lemon, florals and green leafy hops. A touch tart, yeasty and fruity. Gentle bready malts, cereal elements and straw. Initial is a bit more fruity and fairly drinkable than I’d thought, that tartness on the nose doesn’t show up in the body. Some pineapple is fleeting, showing more lemon and florals overall. Touches of gentle bready and grainy malts, some decent dryness and sufficient bitterness as we hit the backend. Grapefruit, some florals and a faint spiciness as we finish. This is fresh, has a really nice nose, and offers a fairly drinkable beer. Tasty stuff. Not the prettiest pour, but that doesn’t really matter. I’d be hard pressed to call this a Saison though, the yeast element falls behind, as American hops really do the work here.

Draft poured at fountainhead. Bright orange yellowish. Had it after a permanent funeral so even withy taste buds fried, it is still hoppy and really good. Fruity tropical notes with a slight bitter finish

Draft at Jerry’s. Murky, darker yellow with good, creamy, white head, modest lacing / Bright, hoppy nose of grapefruit, pineapple, pine, weed / Medium body, creamy with soft carbonation, fruity, lightly sweet, good hopping with bitter finish / Flavors of pineapple, grapefruit, pine, lemon, grain spice / Not catching the funk or saison aspect, but a very nice pale.

So I put this guy on my Facebook list, and suddenly today he pops a picture of his very first beer on tap at the Lemon Tree. So there I go, for a $6 shakerful. Intensely cloudy yellow brown color, almost no head. A sour impression in the nose, then it’s overwhelmed by a lot of tropical fruit hops. Taste is of a saison, but at first mainly a hoppy palate burn with mango and pine. Now it’s showing some thin legs at the side of the glass. Other impression emerge of lemongrass, and later grapefruit. Despite the high IBU listing, the hops are delivering a lot more flavor than bitterness. Brewer Chris Betts has told me about using Citra and Simcoe, though I hope to find out more about his open fermenting system.
