Our darkest year round beer; however, looks can be deceiving. Dunkel boasts brilliant crimson hues from the large amounts of Munich malts used, which creates a fuller bodied beer. The decoction brewing process also adds depth and richness. Bitterness is moderate, with just enough to balance out any sweetness from the malt. Dunkel is smooth, rich and complex, but does not finish heavy.

Draft at lodge. Pours a chestnut brown with a small creamy head. Nose is light sugars, not enough nuts, some light syrup notes. Palate is dry clean and simple. Flavors of light brown sugar and light nuts. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours cola into a shaker. Off white head with little retention recedes to hug rim. Mild caramel aromas. Medium bodied with dark caramel and earthy hops turning to mild cocoa in the medium length finish.

12 oz. bottle from Julio’s. Poured a dark chestnut brown with crimson edges. Thin beige head. Aroma, although weak, hints at molasses, brown sugar and dark bread. Semi sweet with more dark baked bread, burnt sugar and roasted malt. Thin palate, could of been fuller. Didn’t like it as much as I wanted to.

I want to like this beer more than I do. It’s an enjoyable and well-made brew; however, it is just a bit too sweet and really reminds me more of a brown ale at the finish. Not nuanced enough to be an appropriate dunkel lager, but still a nice beer.

Smooth and sweet roasted malt aroma. Although it may look black if held to up to a light bulb it’ll show deep mahogany red. It’s topped by a modest of white head. Silk smooth sweet roasted malt taste. Wet and clean finish. Excellent brew.

Dark garnet pour with minimal head and no retention. Aromas are roasty, toasty and malt. Flavor is a bit different with some nice semi-sweet caramel up front, finishing very balanced with mild hops. Well done dunkel.

Bottle at America on Tap Deep auburn color with a decent off white head. Rich maillard notes with hints of bready pilsner and a touch of floral spicy hops. Nice dark lager.

This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a slight hazy burnt brown color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some light messy lacing sticking and then sliding down into the beer. The smell started off with a sharp sweet breadiness rolling over some nutty malts. Lager yeast shows a nice sweet effect. The taste was mainly sweet with a slight smokey effect rolling over in flavor. A slight roasty to sweet aftertaste rolls into the aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly smooth with a decent sharp nuttiness hitting my tongue. Overall, as a Munich Dunkel, it works. I’d have again and it could definitely be a decent food beer. Maybe closer to dessert.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Gorgeous reddish-amber pour under a long lasting mocha colored head. The aroma has a bit of burnt malts, yeasty notes, thin chocolate, and earthy hops. Lighter body. The taste is smooth, slightly sweet but more bitter as it goes along.
