Marsiblursi (2983) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - SEP 20, 2010
(Bottle) Pours deep mahogany reddish brown with a sand-coloured head. Typical super meaty, sweet and fruity Traquair aroma with notes of salty ham, broth, figs, prunes, black cherries, sticky raisins, toffee/fudge/butter, caramelized nuts, vanilla, orange marmalade, dried apricots and brown sugar. In addition, some black tea, herbs, flowers/tulips, juicy dark bread and earth. Some Belgo-ish esters. Only hints of hops. The nose is unique and complex, like many other Traquair beers. Touch of alcohol. The flavour is light to medium sweet and light bitter. Meaty, dark fruity, dark sugary/syrupy/toffee-ish and malty. Fudge and mild herbs in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is round and soft as well as light sticky with a light carbonation. Medium to full bodied. Hmm, Barley Wine? Reminds me more of a Quadrupel or a Wee Heavy.

Bottled:
Pours deep ruby with a large but fast sinking head. Sweet aroma with notes of wood, toffee and treacle. Thick mouthfeel. Flavour is quite sweet and has notes of wood and cherry stones. Alcohol bitter finish. Will probably improve with age.

Veeery dark red color. Dried fruit and alcohol in aroma. More of the same in the flavor together with a malty body and a lot of sugar for the sweet tooth. The bitterness is there, but not in your face, it rather brings it all together. Some oily viscosity, still not as much as many other barley wines and not enough if you ask me. Still, a nice beer but not top in it’s class.

Croff (164) - Ostra Sonnarslov, SWEDEN - SEP 10, 2010
Pours a dark brown with a reddish hue. Small head that fades to a thin lace very quickly. Aroma of caramel, spice, ripe dark fruit, and a slight hint of toast. Full bodied flavor of dark bread, dark fruit, floral, herb/spice, malt. Foamy mouthfeel with noticable alcahol. A mild dry, syrupy finish, with a oak note. Although drinkable, It is a different barley wine than I have had before. While drinking it I had to keep reminding myself that it was barley wine and not a american strong ale. I look at the ingedients on the bottle and no barley. I look into the Traquair website and it is not referred to as barley wine. So I don’t know what this stuff is as far as a "style", it is drinkable, but nothing special.

Nisse666 (3760) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - SEP 10, 2010
999# rating (RB), 2010-09-10, Göteborg AR: the aroma is wee but destictive of red fruits (cheeries, red grapes), spiced choclolate and some vanilla tones The liquid is oily when pored and the aroma is more "sharp" AP: high froty beige head that slowly diminishes leaving wee curtains, colour of body is dark ruby red. F: oily, vinos a bit sharp but well balanced - will be rounder after ageing a couple of years, great bitterness, cherries, red grapes, chocolate (like a chocolate praline filled with cherry in port wine), a bit sprity. Conclusion: a great scottish hand crafted barley wine, thx!

Bottle (33 cl) from systembolaget. Dark reddish brown, medium creamy beige head. Nutty, almondy, and caramelly malt aroma with dried fruits and a lot of floral and herbal hops. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Dry with a nice, soft, lingering bitterness. A slightly different barley wine with more dark molasses maltiness. Very nice.
