3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
330 mL bottle from Binny’s Beverage Depot in Chicago, served in a snifter. Pours slightly hazy mahogany with a small tan head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves minimal lace. On the nose, there are big notes of molasses, caramel, herbal hops, raisins, fig and oak. The flavour is moderately sweet with toasted malts, caramel, molasses, figs and raisins. This is balanced with herbal hops, earthy notes and a hint of spice. The finish is long and malty with plenty of dark fruit. On the palate, it is medium in body with a smooth, syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is an excellent barley wine with a welcoming fruitiness and a mellow, malty sweetness. It is very well constructed and I would be curious to see how it ages. 2012-04-05
