Red brown beer with almost no head at all. Aroma is raisins, fruits and toffee. Flavour is fruit, raisins, sweetness and a little bit of alcohol. Very, very nice.

11.2oz bottle from Pinch poured into a snifter. Pours a slightly cloudy, dark brown with a thin ring of off-white head. Aroma of caramel, sugar, dark fruit and a little smoke. Taste is light sweet and light bitter. A lot more sugar and caramel than fruit in the taste. Full bodied with a thick texture. Soft carbonation and a long finish. Overall, very good. I would love to try this one when 2020 rolls around.

Gift from Doug Jameson. Bottle from Total Wine. Nice, clean reddish brown pour with a solid lacing and thin head. A strong, raisin, caramel malt and alcohol aroma. A well-balabced taste of dark fruit, caramel malts, toffee and molasses. A mild cognac taste. An Outstanding barley wine.

11.2oz bottle in a snifter. Pours dark brown with a lacy, cream-colored head. Aroma of roasted malts, some bread, caramel, and cereal, floral hops, and hints of chocolate and alcohol. Flavor about the same with a strong malt profile. Texture is smooth, but I wish it was thicker. A really good beer.

Appearance: clear garnet, amber, and cherry woods – dense and polished. Small tannish head fades to a small but solid collar bordering a paper thin tan film. Swirls thick and lacey.
Nose: prunes and fudge, raisins, dried plums and apricots. Fudge weaves in and out of all while dark fruits dominate. Apple skins. Tree bark shavings along the edge with faint whispers of dried leaves.
Palate: prunes and raisins with cinnamon in the back. European chocolates mingle with rich moist black earth. Wisps of smoke in the back – burning bark and wood. Starts to grow tannic along sides – red wine soaked leather and oak. Chocolate truffles with cinnamon and chocolate powder. Spiced and flambéed plums, prunes, grapes, apples, and apricots.
Final Thoughts: lovely and sophisticated. Traquair House never disappoints both in traditional castle brewing and modern inspiration.

Bottle. Dark brown pour with a shade of ruby around edges. Small tan ring of foam on the surface. Aroma is caramel, dark fruit notes, toffee, sweet malt, and soft chocolate. Taste is very rich and malty with big caramel, chocolate toffee, dark fruit notes, soft alcohol and light peaty smokiness. Touch of brown sugar and molasses in here as well. Body is medium-full with a light, creamy carbonation. Ends with more big malt notes, caramel, toffee, light chocolate, dark fruit, and molasses. Rather tasty!

Pours a mahogany color with a small tan head. Aroma of yeast, nuts, chocolate and light alcohol. Flavor of chocolate, malts and slight alcohol. Decent.

11.2oz bottle. Clear dark coppery brown color with a minimal head. Aroma is strong yeastie weirdness, very much Tranquir, very much I like. Strong on herbalness and heavy on malt. Still screams at me as a Scottish barleywine. Flavor is similarly herbal, strong maltiness (deep earthy and leafy) and an ever present alcohol. Easy drinking for a hard beer. I like it, way too pricey to every buy again though.

11.2 oz. bottle. Pours a deep brown that allows no light to pass with clear brown edges. There is a moderate off-white head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left partial lace. Very pleasant aroma of chocolate, caramel, prunes, rum and just a touch of smoke. The flavor is equally enjoyable with ample caramel, prunes, brown sugar and again a bit of smokiness. Some warming from the alcohol arises towards the finish. Perhaps I’ll put a bottle or two away for 2020.

bottle from az wine 4/10/11. dark scotch ale color. clear with a small off white head. it smells like sticks.... woody forest smells mix with sweet smoke, toasted nuttiness, brown sugar, dust and some umami. it tastes a lot like bruised red apples.... sweet and oxidized. there are also notes of molasses, toast, nuts, brown sugar spice oatmeal and some savory business on the end. it is sweet but not cloying. in fact, it is quite enjoyable (especially for one which doesn’t like sugary beers. 8/4/8/4/16/4
