11.2 oz. bottle. Pours a deep brown that allows no light to pass with clear brown edges. There is a moderate off-white head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left partial lace. Very pleasant aroma of chocolate, caramel, prunes, rum and just a touch of smoke. The flavor is equally enjoyable with ample caramel, prunes, brown sugar and again a bit of smokiness. Some warming from the alcohol arises towards the finish. Perhaps I’ll put a bottle or two away for 2020.

bottle from az wine 4/10/11. dark scotch ale color. clear with a small off white head. it smells like sticks.... woody forest smells mix with sweet smoke, toasted nuttiness, brown sugar, dust and some umami. it tastes a lot like bruised red apples.... sweet and oxidized. there are also notes of molasses, toast, nuts, brown sugar spice oatmeal and some savory business on the end. it is sweet but not cloying. in fact, it is quite enjoyable (especially for one which doesn’t like sugary beers. 8/4/8/4/16/4

Dark brown color, almost black; thin head. Light aroma of caramel, sugar, soap, alcohol, light phenol. Strong caramel flavor, rather sweet but boring, with a really too strong flavor of sweet liquorice. Sweet booze, cloying.

Bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of prune, raisins, dates, toffee and licorice. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of toffee, licorice, dried fruit and a hint of vanilla with a smooth dry lingering toffee finish.

Pailhead (4633) - Brownstown, Michigan, USA - JUN 13, 2011
Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, dark fruits, a yeastiness (somewhat similar to Unibroue), and a touch of caramel. It pours a transparent dark orangish-brown with a one finger khaki head that leaves behind spotty lacing. The flavor starts with dark chocolate and fruit. The finish has caramel, a hint of Unibroue-like yeastiness, and a touch of alcohol. medium-full bodied with mild carbonation and slightly syrupy mouthfeel.

11.2 oz. bottle from Grape & Gourmet. Dark brown cola-like pour with a creamy off-white head. Aroma of sweet toffee malts and light floral hops. The aroma really reminds me of a Scotch ale. The flavor is heavy on the sweet caramel and toffee malts with little to offer in the way of bitter hops. Those expecting a barely wine may be disappointed but this is a very solid beer.

Pours a rich dextrinous harp ruby brown with one finger of light tan head. Dextrinous nose with notes of caramel and peat followed by raisins and a mild port-like quality. Rich malty flavor, caramel and sweet toasted grain with some fruity esters and peaty notes. Slightly raisiny with a mild alcoholic warmth and full body.

12oz bottle. Best before April 2020.
Appearance : Deep mahogany with small white creamy head. Some lacing.
Aroma : Alcohol and resinous hops. Caramel malt
Taste : Alcohol and malt. Resinous and herbal hops. Finish nice herbal and resinous hops. Nice caramel. Dry and warm finish.
Overall : Nice hops and nice malt. A bit too warm but I guess this is expected to be aged. Nice caramel on the nose. I really like it’s malt and hops but alcohol is a bit too present. Could be a bit more cohesive too. If I had another bottle I’d wait at least 2 years before opening it.
