Poured dark caramel brown with a thin tan head. Nose is a bit smoky and cardboard. The flavor is more oxidized and just not good. Like burnt cardboard.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 17/20 Alphadelic (1629) - Portland, Oregon, USA - OCT 26, 2008
UPDATED: NOV 20, 2008 Bottle: Deep pinky brown liquid with a creamy off-white head which hangs around for quite a while. The aroma holds something of stale coffee and a slight liquorice root edge along with some dark fruitiness. Deliciously full-bodied with roasty flavours with a sweet beginning turning a little bitter in the finish. Leaves a boozy taste in the mouth. Maybe a little over-fizzy but its borderline. A tasty bitter, a little reminiscent of Traquair’s Laird’s Liquor but less intense. It has the eucalyptus notes of the LL but is a little lighter overall. A wee bit nutty. With a tongue-tingling finish. A roasty bitter, very pleasant. I could definitely enjoy this for the long haul.

Bottle. It pours a clear, amber body with a small off-white head leaving some lacings. Roasted malt, some coffee and chocolate, a little hops and something reminiscent of oxidation in the aroma. Caramel too. Full-bodied and sweet, with caramel, roasted malt giving some coffee and chocolate, and a hoppy fruityness and bitterness. The finish is much the same, both hops and malts doing their job. Quite a nice one, but doesn’t stand out. (081025)

500ml bottle from Nelson Wines. I agree with Ian, this is more an ESB than an old ale. Mid brown with a peristent small cream-coloured head. Bready malt aroma and a dry, slightly fruity taste. Solid and enjoyable.
