COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Mainly available filtered in bottles, though part of the production goes unfiltered into cask.
The traditional brewing process used in the production of Traquair House Ale consists of the following; 1. Traditional infusion mashing process. The wort is then drawn off and boiled during which process the hops are added. 2. The wort is now cooled and pitched with top fermenting yeast under controlled temperature. It is then fermented in oak over a period of seven days. The beer is then transferred into cold storage tanks or barrels and matured over a period of weeks. After maturation the beer is filtered prior to packing.

A really dark coffee colour with one finger head which leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma is toffee, chocolate, dark fruits, and hints of coffee and alcohol. Taste is much the same as the nose. Full bodied and creamy mouthfeel. I really enjoyed this one.

500ml bottle into a nonic. Pours an opaque very dark brown, nearly pitch black, with a one finger medium tan head. Pretty good head retention but the lacing is lacking. Aroma is full of toffee and caramel with some hints of sherry. Touches of oak along with dark fruits and some smoke poking through. The flavor is very heavy on the figs and plums with more of the sherries note present in the aroma. Some burnt toffee and smokey notes in the background but the flavor is overwhelmingly fruity. It works in this case, though. Some woody notes in the background but they are very restrained. Subtle sweet mouthfeel with a bit of lingering stickiness. Overall, a very good scotch ale and more fruity than many of the other ones I have had. Great interplay between the wood, smoke, and fruit and well balanced. A great beer.

Bottle 33cl. Deep but clear chestnut brown, one finger frothy tan head, recedes after a while to a thin layer that lasts, minor lacing; aroma sweet roasted malts, brown sugar, caramel, licorice, raisins, coffee notes; taste mild sweetbitter, roasted caramel notes; full body, creamy texture and mouthfeel, average carbonation; lingering mild roasty bittersweet finish with toffee and woody undertones. Very well-balanced, I like its creaminess.

0.33l bottle. Dark brown color with small brown fast disappearing head. Aroma of caramel and coffee. Finish is nice coffee, little bitterness. Classy beer.

Vintage tasting at the Kulminator (18 year old bottle). A very classic and famous Scotch ’wee heavy’ with complex fruity and malty aroma, coffee, orange, walnuts, calvados, vanilla; sweet malty taste, dried fruits, citrus peel, mellow but thinnish mouthfeel probably as a result of the long ageing, roasted bitterness in the finish. A great experience this was, now let’s purchase a young one for comparison...

Tasted on 3/14/2014. Got it for $7.27 a bottle. This ale seems dark for a Scottish ale being slightly amber but mostly dark brown. A robust flavor followed by a slightly sour finish. I can tell it’s aged in oak, but not smokey or whiskeyish.

BBD June 18. Dark amber pour with a deep dark ruby cast. Exceptional head, lacing and retention. Rich nose of dark fruit and malt - figs, raisins and plums against a rich malt sweetness. The body is heavy medium with a nice slick, almost creamy, texture. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence on the finish. The flavor profile is complex and well balanced. While not as intense as Jacobite, it follows the nose as well. The dark fruits flow into a light hop bitterness over a slightly sweet dark malt background. The smooth finish leaves a bit of lingering oak.

(Traquair House Ale) Bottle 330 ml at home, poured into a snifter. BB 2023. ABV 7.2% Deep brown red colour on the body, one finger of thin tan head sitting on top. Average retention, it leaves light lacing around the glass after it has collapsed and with every swirl of the glass. Aroma of caramel, red fruits, light vanilla, some wood even, hints of alcohol. Taste follows the aroma, caramel, light vanilla, slightly nutty, red stewed fruits, mildly sweet all in all, some roast character too. Very good. Faint bitterness on the aftertaste. Medium thin body, I’d like it a bit thicker. Good carbonation though. Slightly sticky palate. Nice, tasty beer.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared by Dutchdrebus and Ansjelaah. Dark brown color with a nice dark red glare coming through, medium to full sized beige head that lasts for a decent while. Aroma is quite faint, don’t get much really. Taste is malts, a bit thin, lightly a hint of roastyness, a hint of raisins and dark fruits, lightly bitter. Decent body, medium carbonation.
