Mainly available filtered in bottles, though part of the production goes unfiltered into cask.
The traditional brewing process used in the production of Traquair House Ale consists of the following; 1. Traditional infusion mashing process. The wort is then drawn off and boiled during which process the hops are added. 2. The wort is now cooled and pitched with top fermenting yeast under controlled temperature. It is then fermented in oak over a period of seven days. The beer is then transferred into cold storage tanks or barrels and matured over a period of weeks. After maturation the beer is filtered prior to packing.

A really dark coffee colour with one finger head which leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma is toffee, chocolate, dark fruits, and hints of coffee and alcohol. Taste is much the same as the nose. Full bodied and creamy mouthfeel. I really enjoyed this one.

Light brown with a frothy average head. Aromas of caramel, liquorice, sherry, alcohol. Sweet, with a tart and bitter touch, and an alcoholic finish. Soft carbonation and watery to oily mouthfeel. A bit cloying.

2011 vintage @ Croydonia. Deep reddish amber with a modest head. Red apple and cocoa. Rich malty punch. Taste of tobacco Infused liquorice. Toast. Brown bread and cocoa. Still pretty hot! Oily and soft. Decent.

Vintage 2011. Pours clear golden brown with a bubbly khaki head. The nose has lightly toasted bread, ripe fruits, fig, leather. Medium sweet flavor with lots of leathery fruits, earth, toasted grains, faint ash and cocoa. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes with more toasty bread, faint metal, earth, toffee. Not bad. (3.6)

Vintage 1991. Pours clear light brown with a slight, bubbly white head. A fair bit of oxidation in the nose, some caramel, leather. Medium sweet flavor with a bit of tobacco, rich figs, bread, mellow alcohol. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish with lots more fig, date, bread. Certainly some age, but very nicely nuanced. (3.8)

Vintage 1985. Pours clear brown, darker than the previous vintages, with a bubbly tan head. Nice aroma with rich burnt crackers, bread, toffee, faint cocoa. Light to medium sweet flavor with a bit of burnt pine, slight metal, burnt toast, grain, toffee. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Fairly bitter on the finish with more pine, earth, ashy cocoa, dried berry, so e beat-up leather. Pretty interesting. (3.6)

Vintage 1977, batch 6. Pours clear, light brown with a few bubbles for a head. Mellow aroma, suggestions of bread and caramel, grain. Light sweet flavor with some tangy berries, earthy bitterness, oily fruits, bitter grain, caramel. Medium bodied, chewy, with soft carbonation. Finishes with bready malts, more caramel, some toffee, light berry, grain. Not bad overall, especially given the age. (3.4)

Dark red-brown colour with a small beige light creamy head. Aromas of malts, bread, dried raisins, some caramelised nuts and fruity-herb notes develop. Lightly carbonated, slick texture with a full body. Fruity-malt sweetness up front with light woody notes to it and a light faint bitterness. Lasting finish. Pretty complex beer.

UPDATED: JUN 26, 2015 Bottle, pours brown/black with an off white head. Aroma: burnt caramel, prunes, raisins, hint of peat, wood, herbs, earthy. Taste: burnt caramel, dark fruit, elderberries, some peat, molasses, bay leaf, herbs. Medium sweet, light-moderate bitter, oily texture, somewhat thin, medium body, soft carbonation. Sweet, slightly cloying finish.

Bottle from Boise Coop. Nice pour, initial airy head which subsides to a tight beige head. Heady aroma of malt and peat, taste moreso, with some added caramel. Earthy, cloying finish. Nice!

330 ml bottle from Birsciop. Dark copper/brown, hard to see through, with a small, bubbly and persistent light beige head. Poweful and intense nose, grapey and winey, burnt caramel and dark fruits reminiscence almost like a BSA, quite nutty and slightly boozy in the background. Oaky and almost woody taste upfront, mildly astringent and slightly tannic, not exactly easy to drink as there is pretty much no fizz whatsoever. Moderate warming sensation, herbal and almost medicinal aftertaste. Flat to soft carbonation, medium body, oily texture. Maybe it’s an unlucky bottle, maybe I just don’t like scotch ales.

Bottle at Oak Barrel, Helsinki-V airport. Pours dark brown with a little head. The aroma features creamy fudge, vanilla, oak and caramel, gives an aged impression. Taste is medium to heavy sweet, very malty. Caramel, vanilla, bread and some dark fruitiness appear. The palate is medium bodied, fairly flat, a bit sticky. Nice flavours, could perhaps use a fuller body.

Il colore è bruno, quasi di corteccia, invitante e sontuoso, con riflessi rubino; la schiuma si presenta fine, ocra e persistente. Al naso si percepiscono nettamente note di miele di castagno, caramello, frutta secca e fave di cacao a cui fa capolino, col passare del tempo, una nota legnosa e di rabarbaro. L’aroma è ben strutturato, elegante ed invita a una degustazione puntuale e rilassata. In bocca il corpo è medio e la carbonazione lieve, al gusto si distinguono nettamente note di cola, fave di cacao e frutta secca, contrappuntata da una leggera acidità abbastanza tipica in queste birre dai sapori tostati. Il finale è rotondo ed offre una bella sensazione di persistenza caratterizzata da cacao amaro e liquirizia accompagnata da una piacevole sensazione di warming che rivela il grado alcolico (7.2%).
