Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Appearance: Pours a dark, chestnut brown body that picks up some reddish hints when held up to the light. Also, a thin, ivory-colored head! Smell: Dark malt aroma yields a scent of caramel and brown sugar alongside notes of plums and oven-toasted coriander seeds, which, being a popular gin ingredient rightly has me thinking of gin. Taste: Dark maltiness with tastes of dark brown sugar, maple syrup, and nuts. Pleasing, though never overwhelming sweetness. Faint dark fruitiness. Earthy, herbal coriander spice flavor, along with a mild bitterness and warming genever presence does a good job of tempering the malty sweetness. Leaves you with a lingering taste of pumpernickel bread. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-low carbonation. Slight stickiness to the mouthfeel. Drinkability: A fine spiced ale. Plenty of complexity as well as overall restraint and balance to deliver an interesting, tasty brew.

Lots of caramel in this one. Pours dark, nice aroma ... but ultimately not as satisfying to me as the Traquair House Ale. I’m willing to drink more, though, in the name of science.

Pours a murky, red brown with a medium khaki head that fades fast but rings the glass. Very spicy, caramel malt, and Belgian yeast bready aroma. Very sweet cherry, orange flavor for the start but then some dried spice flavors carry it over to a dry floral finish. Kind of tart and woody in a way too. Deep and revealing.

In the bottle from HyVee CB. Pours such a dark brown that you’d confuse it for being black. Almost no head at all when poured, but once the beer is in the glass, if you swirl it, you can generate a nice reddish ochre looking head. The aroma is of plums and licorice. This is a flat beer that is medicine-like in a fowl way. I am greatly disappointed by this after reading all the hype. The spices just don’t seem to be pleasant to my taste. This is definitely thinner in body than I would have expected for a beer that is almost rated a 4. I’ll not likely ever drink this again.

(SCOTLAND) Pours a nice dark brown color with a sm white head. The aroma is of coco beans, dark fruit, and molasses. The taste is very malty with some vanilla, and licorice notes !!! You don’t taste the 8% in this brew which is very nice. So i must say this one was a total suprise for me, Do yourself a favor a get some. :)

Dark brown, Flat, malty, caramel, chocolate, little dark fruits, nutty, and spice. It kind of reminds me of flat cola. Must be a off bottle. Still not bad.
