Aroma of raisin and sherry. Pours a dark muddy brown with a mild head. Tastes of raisin, sherry, coriander, and slightly acidic prune. Medium bodied with mild carbonation. Very good beer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Classic spiced Scotch ale since 1995, with a yellowish beige, medium thick but thinning and eventually breaking, moussy head, colour a very dark and clear ruby red, quiet fizz. Rich malty and spicy aroma which initially reminded me a lot of Rochefort 10, with impressions of banana, caramel candy, coriander, port wine, cloves, eucalyptus, raisins, pear, cognac, marzipan, chocolate, hazelnut paste, red wine, liquorice. Sweet onset, candied dates and cherries, rounded, rather thick and oily palate, smooth with a deep caramelly, nutty and eventually more chocolatey maltiness, adorned with strongish retronasal spiciness (especially coriander seed, subjective impressions of ’drop’ and cloves) with drying effect, further spreading into the satisfying, long and warm finish where some liqueurish alcohol, leafy hops and dark bittersweet malts are beautifully interwoven. Deservedly a classic, in which the maltiness combined with the coriander give it a somewhat ’Belgian’ bouquet. I can imagine this tastes less ’common’ to a Scottish or English consumer than to a Belgian one.

"i LOVE their house ale...why’d they have to go and add coriander? i think it distracts from an otherwise solid beer. nice aroma and body, but the flavor is a miss. too bad..."

Birra scura incredibile.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
330ml bottle served in a pint glass.
A: Simple but beautiful bottle art. Pours a very dark amber color forming a creamy and thin bubbled tan head. Medium retention and lots of spotty lacings left in the glass. A thin layer remains forever on the top
S: Very malty and metallic. Strong notes of toffee, caramel, caramel malts, roasted malts, oak, raisins. Roasted and a bit smoked
T: Sweet upfront. Very malty and a bit fruity. Again, strong notes of toffee, caramel, caramel malts, crystal malts, oak, roasted malts. Mild bitterness as a traditional ale should be
M: Heavy creamy body. Medium to low carbonation. Extremely malty aftertaste
O: Great drinkability. A classic that deserves its reputation

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
33cl bottle served in a Trappist glass. Pours a very clear dark brown colour with a few large bubbles and a very short lived bubbly head. Aroma is quite subdued but there are notes of malt and sweetness. Taste is burnt sugar, toffee and caramel. Disappointing lack of spices. The taste is too one-dimensional and the mouthfeel quite watery. Disappointing.

Dark red color, minimal beige head. Aroma of caramel, roasted malt, burnt sugar, dried fruits and herbs. Sweet taste has similar notes, light roasty bitterness in finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Drinkable, but expected much more.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
33 cl bottle from Liviko Alcostore in Tallinn harbour (€ 3,10). BB Apr 2024. Pours a reddish brown, mahagony red against light. Head is tan, drops fast to leave a thin scattered layer, then disappears. Nose is sweet of dark autumn fruits like plums and dates, maybe even some apple notes there, but also caramel candy, crisp malts, spices. Taste is equally autumny, with molasses, plums and apples, and a considerable alcoholic zing after it’s warmed for a while (also on the nose). It’s a bit like a weaker version of some Barley Wine. Finish balances nicely between spicy and bittersweet. Medium body with a nice and soft, velvety mouthfeel and mild, crisp carbonation. This is good.
I’m going to get a couple more bottles, and hope to restrain myself from opening at least one of these before 5-10 years. The idea gives me goosebumps.
