COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

(Bottle BBE 05/2017) Pleasant aroma of roasted malt, caramel, alcohol, licorice and anise. Dark red brown colour and brownish, small head with a hint of lacing. Roasted malty, spicy (anise) and licorice flavour. Lively carbonated, oily, slightly alcoholic and medium to full-bodied palate. Tasty brew! 24/06/07

330 ml bottle at GH. Brown with a ruby tint, off white head. Aroma sweet and bready, almost like svagdricka, some malt and burnt sugar. Taste is sweet, sugary, bread, light smoke, svagdricka and mild liquorice. A bit too sweet for me

33 cl. bottle, BBE December 2022... Clear, dark amber colour with a golden tint. Thin, off-white head, that lasts throughout. Fruity aroma with plums, resins, mild chocolate, caramel malts, toast, liquorice, rather spicy. Taste is sweet. Medium body with a creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes rather dry and spicy with faint liquorice, dark fruits and light impressions of alcohol. Lovely, rather spicy.

Bottle; pours dark brown with a tan head; aroma of caramel, dark fruits, molasses, spices, and a hint of alcohol; flavor is sweet with roasted malt, dark fruit, caramel, a hint of spice and oak; semi-dry finish with a little alcohol warming; very little bitterness; drinks very smooth and the alcohol is barely noticeable; very good, complex beer

Bottle - pours dark brown with very thick tan head. Nose of malt, rum, and booze. Taste is of caramel, plums, rum, and malt. Would be nice to have sitting by the fireplace. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From bottle. Deep dark brown color with quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma is molasses, plum, and roasted chocolate malt, maybe some cherry also. Taste is similar to aroma, but a lit more subdued and with more molasses and some added roasted notes. Molasses finish, sweet but not too sweet.

Years of seeing this and I finally buy a bottle in SLC. Pours a dark brown with some ruby highlights and a thin tan head of tiny bubble that settles quickly. Bold aroma that reminds me of cinnamon cereal that has been toasted. Flavor has some molasses and spice. Good just make sure you let it warm a touch to get the full flavors.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared by Dutchdrebus and Ansjelaah. Red brown color, small beige head. Smell and taste malts, slightly iron, slightly a hint of caramel, lightly bitter. Quite hard to describe imo. Decent body and carbonation.

bottle. Amber with one finger head. Caramel malt base with a bit of sweetness. Pleasant with a bit of booze, but I was hoping for something a bit more flavorful. I was a bit underwhelmed given the ratings.

This is one of the first truly interesting beers I had before the craft beer explosion. Fairly high in alcohol at 8%. Dark in color. Chocolate, caramel, and spices. It is brewed with coriander and it definitely comes through on the palate. Cool label, cool beer.

Bottle. This is a delicious ale with lots of depth of flavor and great malt character.
