COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Pours a brown black with a thin head. Dried fruit and spice in the nose. Not too different from a lightly spiced mulled wine I had earlier. Cherries, raisins, a little brown sugar, and citrus aromas. Red wine, with cherries and raisins dominate the flavor. Some coriander and anise spice near the finish that is both bitter and juicy. The spice is a little heavy handed but not overdone. Ok. I feel like I should heat this up and put it in a mug. Good for a Christmas night.

Poured into a Kwak glass. Appearance is ruby brown, fairly dark, a beige fizzy head which doesn’t last long. Aroma- caramel, fruitcake, port, malty, brown bread, raisin. Taste- chocolate, fudge, caramel, almonds, cherry, sugary fruitcake, slightly fluffy mouthfeel, bitter at first but finishes sweet. Very nice indeed.

330 ml bottle, poured into a wine glass, black, no head. Aroma has some liquorice, dark plums, herbal liquor. Taste has some mild liquorice again, a weak hop bite, some caramel sweetness that gives way for a longer tingling aftertaste. Dry. Feels old. I guess this is nice example of the style, personally not crazy about it.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep brown colour with a medium tan head. Aromas of caramel, roasted malts, plum, figs, toffee, pecans and alcohol. Taste of caramel, toffee, coffee, plum, liquorice and molasses, also a little oak and spiciness. Soft carbonation and medium bodied. A long and warming malty, spicy finish. A really lovely complex and drinkable beer, definitely buy this again.

Bottled, serves half-pint perfectly. Short head, quite fizzy to start off. Cola on the nose, then toffee and caramel. Strong palate and sweet aftertaste.

In bottle. Beige, rocky, fairly persistent head. Dark Copper, bit cloudy. Fairly intense and persistent at nose. Dark honey, raisin, caramel, toffee, dark chocolate, something reminding scotch ale. Medium body, medium carbonation. Warming sensation. Sweet. Roast bitter.

Subdued chestnut and maple syrup nose. Clear brown, medium yellow head. Wood, pecan, and chocolate syrup. Light to medium body. A touch cloying, at least, far sweeter than its lack of complexity can support.

A clear dark body with a minimal head. Nose has sweet aromas of grapes and sherry. Taste is sweet with cola-like qualities and a mildly bitter finish. Low carbonation and rich palate. Quite nice, reminds a lot of swedish julmust.

Poured into a perfect pint. I assume this is the right listing, but this says "ale brewed with coriander and fermented in oak barrels" below the Jacobite Ale text. 3.0 A: Deep brown, nearly black, color. One and a half fingers of frothy beige head. Retention is below average and not much of any lacing is left. 4.25 S: Might not look great, but it smells great. Coriander hits you right on the first whiff and hits you hard. Earthy peatiness, light roastiness, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, mineral, and some spicy phenols. Very nice, but could use a bit more power. 4.0 T: Like the nose, the coriander is readily apparent. Underneath you find much of what the nose has: earthy peat, light roast, brown sugar, molasses, caramel. Mineral and phenols are upped somewhat in the taste. Though I love the taste of coriander, it does dominate the brew. Whether or not that is a bad thing, I don’t know. But it does prevent a deeper inspection as to how the flavors mesh. Still, damn good. 3.5 M: Medium to heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Somewhat slippery feel. Could use some more creaminess, but good enough. 4.0 D: I probably rated this higher than it deserves, but I love coriander so that’s how it is. Worth a try either way though. Solid all around. UPDATED: FEB 2, 2015 Very complex aroma, but dificult to define (banana, cola, chocolate...maybe), medium sweetness, medium bitter, dark brow ruby colour almost black, clear, tan foam, medium body, creamy-milkie feel, astringent, bitter finish that comes back...soft carbonation...good beer . And you can feel the coriander in the aroma and in the taste but very integrated.
