The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Pours a brown black with a thin head. Dried fruit and spice in the nose. Not too different from a lightly spiced mulled wine I had earlier. Cherries, raisins, a little brown sugar, and citrus aromas. Red wine, with cherries and raisins dominate the flavor. Some coriander and anise spice near the finish that is both bitter and juicy. The spice is a little heavy handed but not overdone. Ok. I feel like I should heat this up and put it in a mug. Good for a Christmas night.

330ml bottle. Not sure why I’ve not rated this before. Had a chance to properly savour it this time. Sweet liquorice of course with a tinge of treacle, ginger and coriander and a lovely sticky mouthfeel. A classic without a doubt.

Dank from a bottle at a bar. Sweet, strong taste that resembles slightly that of a madeira or a port.

Color rojizo oscuro casi negro con espuma beige. Aromas de frutas confitadas y moscatel. En boca es sedosa dulce y muy afrutada con picos ácidos. Muy rica.

330ml bottle form Appellation Wines. Pours dark brown, red tinge. No real head. Aromas are toffee malt and light spice. Taste has lots more toffee, and a strange menthol note. No real bitterness. Good clean finish. Pretty good.

Niemal doskonale. Pachnace chalwa i jakimis przyprawami, ale nie zidentyfikowalem ich. W smaku wspaniale. Alkoholowe cieplo, smak czekoladowo piernikowy, troche rodzynek i sliwek w czekoladzie. Slodowa tekstura i niewielka bezowa piana. Wspaniale zrownowazone piwo.

Bottle as shown thanks to Paul! Pours a cloudy brown with beige head that diminishes. The aroma is candy sugar, spice, and caramel. Medium mouthfeel with sugary malt and boozy finish. Good.

Bottle from Terre de Boissons, Coquelles, France. A dark brown coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Sweet aroma of caramel and prunes. Taste is similar, sweet, prunes (reminds me of school dinner dessert in the 70’s), spice, caramel, feels very vintage this one. Very good.
