COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Bottle @ Garrison District Ale House in Fredericton, NB Canada. Very excited to find this on the menu. Opaque amber brown, with thin whispy off-white head, some minimal lacing. Aroma is a a heavy malty backbone with hints of candied sugar, and strange whiffs of pepper. Body is quite full, leaning towards "pretty chewy" for what it is! Great aftertaste with bits of toast showing through and a mildly warming finish. Yummy.

BBD June 2018. Pours almost as dark as a stout, but has a very deep dark ruby hue. Nice head and lacing that retains well. The nose is dark fruits (dates, raisins and figs) coupled with hints of vanilla, oak, anise and coriander over a rich malt sweetness. Full bodied with a rich luxurious creamy texture. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence on the finish. The outstanding flavor profile is both complex and balanced. It follows the nose with dark fruits slowly yielding to the sweet malt. In the middle chocolate notes are evident that slowly fade to a very subtle vanilla and smoky oak. The finish leaves you with a note of coriander and the only hint of alcohol. In short, this is a brewer’s masterpiece.

33cl bottle. Pours very dark red, almost black in the glass with a quickly disappearing beige head. Smell is roasted malts, caramel, molasses, plums, light soy sauce aroma, some alcohol. Taste is similar, some burnt sugar sweetness, light final bitterness. Excellent.

Bottle. Pours a fairly dark brown color with a moderate light tan head on there. Nose is extremely malty, with a lot of caramel and bready-earth tones coming off it. Taste is a little bit sweet and definitely earthy, with just a bit of bread and yeast to it. Creamier and breadier than I would like.

Eccellente e particolarissima birra! Dolce, dall’aroma affumicato e maltato, sembra di assaggiare del "marzapane liquido". Si avvicina molto ad una barley wine. Da non perdere!

330ml bottle at home. Pours oily black. Little or no head. Bit of tan in it. Molasses, cherry, honey, blackberry, alcohol and spice on the nose. Flavour is caramel dark fruit syrup sweetness with slick mouthfeel. Slight alcohol hit on the back of throat. Full flavoured body with lasting luscious berry aftertaste. Nice

Bottle from Traquair House brewery shop. Clear ruby body with a thin beige head. Lively carbonation. Light lacing. Aroma of fig, toffee, heather honey and coriander. Flavour of spices, toffee and herbs. Easy drinking for the ABV. Medium body with a sticky mouthfeel. Soft fizz. This reminds me of Westmalle’s Dubbel.

A lovely beer which seems very old fashioned, and that’s quite appropriate, the look and history behind it. I thought there was a sweet tone from various old style laid down fruits, some brown sugar and chocolate. Fine balance between sweet and bitter and a good alcohol strength.
