Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Bottle. Deep brown with red tint. Lovely aromatic bouquet: musk, dandelion, wildflowers galore, witch’s herbs, and a thick slab of Black Forest cake hold the icing--all black cherries and chocolate and no fluff. Nice. Also, nose and mouth offer up Viennese pastry. Mouthfeel is thin in this bottle--too bad! Flavors are round, smooth. Sweet-tart, bold yet understated. More black forest cake and Viennese pastry. Loads of homemade mincemeat!! made with raisin, dates, allspice, walnut, cola, sasparilla, and nutmeg. Totally pleasant, fulfilling brew. Yum!

My first ’product of Scotland’, very interesting and unique stuff. Not much of a head to this dark murky reddish brew. Chocolate + plums + smoke in the nose. Sweet initial taste, along with small bubbles, followed by roasted notes that takes you down easy. Enjoyable.

Sampled from a bottle provided by Øl Konsortiet at EBF 08. Russet-like body colour with a moderate, beige head. Aroma of spiced fruits. Vinous taste of dark fruits and malts, herbs and liquorice. A touch of hop resin in the aftertaste. I’ll go for a bottle of this one when I get the chance (night cap, late on 12.09.208).

11.2 oz bottle, BB 2014. Clear crimson brown with a tan haze. Nose is blueberry, plum brandy, fig and toffee. Mediumish body with faint carb. Taste is raisin, dates, wood and grape skins. Dry bitter finish. Sticky, not too sweet, kind of boring.

[EBF @ Copenhagen, September 2008] Bottle. Small foamy off-white head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Mahogany color. Aroma of grain, mild oak like, spice, toasted malt, chocolate, butterscotch, fruit. Medium to full bodied with an average carbonation and smooth texture. Moderated sweet flavor with some counter bitterness. Dried fruity and mild alcoholic warming finish. Well brewed.

Wonderful nose with a malty spice and a hint of a thoroughbred scotch. It’s ABV is betrayed by a lightness to what would appear, by looks, to be a heavy beer. Has a smooth finish that is long but without any bitter hues of aftertaste. Just a hint of carbonation leds the flavors bounce....dark, malty, chocolately even, but always with a persistent coriander bias. Highly recommend even at relatively high price
