650ml bottle. Pours a dark brown body, gorgeous big and fluffy mocha head, excellent retention and good lacing. Aroma of a sweet IPA, caramel, toffee, citrus, pine, bread, roasted malt and a tad woody. Intense taste, tons of roasted malts, caramel and toffee, wormwood, oak wood. The body is medium to heavy, oily and thick, soft carbonation and a long bitter finish.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours coffee black with a thin tan head that dissipates to a ring. No lacing. Nose is roasted malts mouth taste is similar with the addition of some light espresso, and maybe a background hint of dark fruit. Finish is very bitter. Creamy in the mouth. More like an impy stout with less body or a stron porter than a typical black ipa. Creamy in the mouth. Nice beer though, regardless of what it actually is.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Big arma of dark charred malts, soy, alcohol, and a touch of pine. Smells alot like an imperial stout to be honest. Its got a porter mouth feel, and soft carb. The finish is more roast, its big and bold. Bitter cocoa, subtle pine. Hmmmm black ipa? Not sure. Its a super tasty beer, but ......

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pretty good for a style that usually acts like some kind of an orphaned child. Smells like strong dark malts with hops, almost like a kind of imperial stout. There’s alcohol in the smell as well as a faint touch of anise. Pours black with long retaining head and great lacing. Taste is bittersweet but the caramelized malt takes over from the hoppy IPA character to push it more along the lines of a stout. Good drink. Bottle.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 12/20
650mL bottle from the LCBO. Pours a solid black with lots of tan head that dissipates quickly. Smell is a bit sweet with lots of roasty hops, a tiny bit of hoppy aroma as well, very nice. Palate is nice, a bit oily and some good carbonation that isn’t overly agressive. Taste is a bit bitter and a bit sweet, maybe a bit watery as well. A slight bitter aftertaste. Needs more punch.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, shared at midsummernight beer tasting
Intense black in color, big lasting beige head. Roasty aroma, with grassy and earthly hops, very subtle c-hop notes compared to other beers of same style. Taste is more fruity than the aroma, citrus combined with roast and chocolate. Finish is very nice

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, shared with Robbie. Ironic that I had to come all the way to Ontario to get a beer that’s brewed 9 hours drive from my house. Was it worth it? Yes.
Near black pour with a lasting brown head. I’m not sure how tey did this, but the aroma is nearly all rich dark malts (roast, cocoa, hints of figs), while t palate is overtaken by crushing hop bitterness. After about halfway, my sensesequilibrated and the whole thing reached a near-perfect harmony for me. Just an excellent example of war this style can achieve in a alanced beer. So very good.
