COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rich full-bodied ale dominated by chocolate and roasted malt flavours. A subtle bitterness leads to a long creamy finish on this aphotic beauty.

Ever since I tried Tree Brewing’s Spy Porter, I have looked forward to their offerings in black beer, and Old School is no slouch. Pour motor-oil black with a thick tan head, scent of chocolate and coffee, which comes back again in spades with the taste. This is a beer for chocolate lovers and no mistake. While not exactly something you’d use for a long session, it is nonetheless a superb beer worth savouring.

Aroma is dark malts, chocolate, mocha, and vanilla. Taste and a rich roastiness and dark sweet malts. Finishes with a fair amout of bitterness. Slight tang and earthiness. Appearance is a black body with a light brown bubbly head that retains fairly well.

Very dark, almost black...they use the word aphotic on the bottle and I like that. Bubbly light brown head. The aroma is black patent, bit of chocolate, and a touch of woody hop character. Rich, lots of roast, lots of dark chocolate. A bit more assertively roasty than most local stouts, so occupies a different niche.

Bottle to pint glass Chocolate, clove, toasted malt, chestnut, and a little coffee. Dark brown with a reddish tinge and and moderate lasting thin tan head. Chocolate, coffee, toasted malt. A pretty average stout in my opinion.

Pours an opaque black with a large persistent light brown head that leaves lots of spotty lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, cocoa, low resinous hop aroma. Taste is dark bittersweet chocolate, roasted malts, coffee with some malt sweetness and a fairly dry finish. Medium high body, creamy mouthfeel and a medium high carbonation. Great stout that’s Roasty, chocolaty and nicely bitter.

Black color with small creamy head. Nice roasty aroma with milky accent, and bread. Highly carbonated mouthfeel, off-dry; prominent roasted malt flavor but not too aggressive; light impression of lactose. Maybe a bit too much roasty in the final.
Indeed old school.

650 ml bottle. Pours black with a red tinge and full tan head of big bubbles. Aromas of nuts, coffee, and dry roasted malts. Flavors of milk chocolate, light coffee, light vanilla, and roasted malts. Light bitter finish. Very nice

Bottle. Rich looking, very dark, finely bubbled brown head. Hard roast profile, with notes of espresso, pig manure, ash. Very full bodied for 5.5%. Bitter finish with some acidity. An excellent bread-and-butter stout, old school indeed.

Bomber. Haven’t had a Tree for a while, very glad they put ingredients on the label so I can learn about the tastes of different components (example Perle hops here). Nose is ashy/smokey roast with some fruity hop character. Flavour has that roast and some fruit, on the bitter end for stouts of this ABV. No acridness or lame chocolateness despite all the dark malts. Some stout sourness. Medium viscosity and carb. Well done.
