2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 Pawola22 (1985) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 20, 2011
12oz bottle from The Beer Depot in Ann Arbor, MI. We have a gusher here. Pours a cloudy, ruby tinted brown with a big, frothy, tan head that collapses slowly and leaves a light lacing. Aroma is sweeter caramel and grains with a touch of chocolate and toasted nuts. Flavor is medium sweet caramel, some slightly off fruit flavors, grains, and a bit of a toasted nut. Finishes somewhat sweet and dry with a touch of grainy toast before leaving a medium length aftertaste. Medium-light body with a fairly lively, medium-high carbonation. Overall, an unremarkable brown ale. Sweet and grainy with a bit of a toastiness, but the gusher and poor carbonation definitely don’t help this.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 48FanInCali (320) - California, USA - JUL 1, 2011
12 oz bottle. Very dark cola brown pour. Thick beige head. Nose was medicinal with some malt in there. Taste also had an antiseptic overtone. Way too much carbonation for this style. If New Castle is the C grade for the style this is barely passing.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 hamilton23 (414) - Alpine, California, USA - JUN 21, 2011
A: Pours chestnut brown with loads of beige head. No retention.
S: Toasted nuts, some maltiness and mostly bandaids.
T: Roasted malts but with some residual metallic taste in there.
M: Overly carbed.
O: A pretty mediocre beer. Not sure why the metallic taste, maybe starting to oxidize.
2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 esjaygee (2496) - Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 19, 2010
Gusher. Murky burnt umber with a slowly fading fluffy six finger head. Aroma of grains, caramel, malt and brown sugar. Taste is sour and infected with caramel and nuts behind it.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Tmoney99 (6885) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - JUL 13, 2010
Bottle. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate sweet nutty aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium sweet flavor with a smooth sweet finish of moderate duration. This beer would go well with a good cigar.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Cybercat (1734) - Georgia, USA - JUL 12, 2010
Aroma is malty, a little fruity, and a little yeasty. It pours a hazy mahogany with a light cinnamon-tan head that is fairly thick if not persistent. Flavor has a strong, cider-like fruity overtone as well as yeasty and malty hints. Texture is fairly smooth and a little fizzy; it leaves behind a slightly metallic aftertaste. Overall, not too shabby.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 WakeandBake (549) - Greenville, Michigan, USA - MAR 14, 2010
Bottle . A dark reddish brown color with a small offwhite head , leaving some spotty lacing , medium carbonation. Aroma is nutty and grainy , malty , earthy and slightly spicy with a hint of fruit esters . Flavor was much better than expected , nice raosty caramel malt ,, yeasty fruit esters like maybe apple skins , lightly sweet with some earthy and nutty flavors , lightly bitter , long slightly dry roasty finish . Medium body with a nice clean mouthfeel . I found this to be a nice Brown , sessionable and something I would buy again for sure .
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 Goblincat (367) - Westland, Michigan, USA - JAN 4, 2010
Nutty malty aroma. The taste has some nuttiness and spice followed by a slight bit of sour that I actually like. I drank this one really cold, so it’s hard to say if there was much wrong with it, but I liked it the way I had it. I have to admit, I left it outside when the temp got down to 8 degrees or so, and it froze. The cap failed and a bit was frozen outside the bottle. I brought it in, pulled the cap, quickly recapped it, and stuck it in the fridge to slowly thaw out. It seems to have recovered nicely, but I can’t guarantee it would have tasted this way fresh. Overall, I can’t complain.
