OldGrowth (1256), Cary, North Carolina, USA Apr 28, 2008 Pint at Tylers Apex. Good aroma, sour bitter. Grassy sour dough. Clean golden yellow color, Ok head with minor lacing. Bitter flavor, lemon, grass, sourdough, little yeasty spiciness about it. Light body, smooth creamy body, litely bitter finish. Kind of surprised I’m just getting around to this one. I had it out a bunch. Another one I like for the flavor I get from it for being lower in alcohol. Great session beer. Suttree (2267), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Apr 28, 2008 Golden oragange, thin white ehad. Faint aroma - crisp, a bit hoppy. Flavor is smooth, with a woodsy hop note. Seems to be a little too understated, but a decent session ale. On tap, Flying Saucer, Raleigh. TURDFERGUSON (1021), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA Apr 13, 2008 On draught at Acme in Carrboro. Wow, this one came out a lot lighter than I expected. Light yellow golden with a thick white head. Nose was pretty faint with some sweet, biscuit malts and some very mild hops. Flavor was equally mild and light with some more biscuit malt, light hops, and a mild yeast flavor. Definitely much lighter than I expected, but still a nice local and refreshing summer beer. But it is kinda crazy to have this beer be the same style as something like Three Floyds Alpha King. They really should add the "Xtra" they have in the commercial description to the tap handles and on all menus that serve this beer as I could see it throwing some people off. wilkie (1045), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Mar 10, 2008 Draught, at the Flying saucer in downtown Raleigh. Pours golden, with a medium white head. Aroma is biscuit, slightly sweet. Flavor is very thin and watery. This is really just a light beer. Little bit of hops at the end. Yuck! durhambeer (323), Durham, North Carolina, USA Feb 29, 2008 On tap at Watts Grocery. Not what I expected, for sure. This is an "Xtra Pale Ale" and they should advertise as such. I actually thought they had brought me a lager of something else.
This is a pretty unremarkable brew, but it’s certainly not offensive. If I had known what to expect, I might have liked it more. I’m excited to support this local brewery, but they are picking some weird-ass styles to start with-- seems like polar opposites to do this and then Belgian styles... curious to see what they do next.
