3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
330ml bottle from some big supermarket somewhere. Malty aroma, sickly sweet figs and liquorice coming from first sip with some warming Autumnal shades of malts, nuts, berries & raisins emerging as you journey on. Wasn’t sure I liked this at first. Now I think I do.
Also it should be mentioned that this is brewed every year to commemorate the anniversary of the 1854 Charge of the Light Brigade, something Iron Maiden’s ’The Trooper’ ale is also named after. If only Iron Maiden’s attempt had as much venom and strength as this. You listening Bruce?

Bottle @ Borefts ’13 thx to Martinus. Clear copper colour with a small sized white head. Smells fruity and sweet. Tastes fruity and sweet also. Nothing crazy, but still decent. Medium body, soft fizzy carbo.
They should do a collab with Mikkeller and call it ’Death or Gloryhole’.

Bottle bought from ASDA in North Watford, Herts. An amber/chestnut coloured pour with a thin off white head on top. Sweet, malty, caramel aroma. Taste is similar, sweet, malty, caramel, fig, dark fruit, slightly boozy. Reminded me of a Belgian Christmas beer. I’m not usually a fan of Tring Brewery but I really enjoyed this one. Not a fan of ASDA either but I’d be happy to go back there to stock up on this tasty barley wine.

2oz sample from a 330ml bottle courtesy of @gabethestereotypicalasianguy. 7.2%. Pours a coppery-brown with a bubbly tan head, no lacing, barely-there retention. Aroma is reminiscent of darker trappist biers, fig, black currant, raisin, and a bit of a yeasty sourness. Very farm-style on the pallet, lots of yeasty, cracked wheat notes, with some mild soft fruit sweetness. Not well liked at the table, but they were mostly beer weaklings. Definitely Glory, not death.

On cask at the Wellington (Birmingham)
This not only got me a new county tick but helped me discover a rich beer that was completely beyond all expectations. A deceptively easy drinking barleywine might lack the ABV punch of some bigger cousins but makes up for it with a very flavorful experience.
Aroma / Appearance - The semitransparent caramel base changes to a deep brown near the top of the half pint glass. The head is a nice dusty white. Caramel, cherry pie, toasted pieces of white bread, and red Twizzlers dipped in chocolate provide a rich foundation to start from.
Flavor / Palate - The mouthfeel is like drinking cherry pie filling with a dash of water. Cherries stick in the throat as a wave of almonds and maple syrup highlight a balanced approach to a barley wine. It lacks the hop profile of many but put that down to being on cask.

(330ml bottle from Asda, High Wycombe) Pours a deep amber bordering on mahogany, with a thin off-white head. Mildly vinous at first, before strong malted barley and Weetabix characteristics develop. There’s a little fig sweetness too, but this is mainly about the grain. Initial sweetness is well balanced with the dusty bitterness of wheat chaff blown from a combine harvester. Works really well in a traditional kind of way and much better than I expected from Tring. Nice one.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Quite a departure from my usual IPA and Brown Ales. Malty, toffees, a little hop up front. There is a little smokyness there. Reminds me of Sherrys I tried when I was much younger. Undercarbed a little, but it bites the tip of the tongue a little anyway. Pours a bubbly finger of head, but dissipates quickly. One might think you were partaking of a flat coke looking at the glass. I quite like this though.
