Plenty of roasted malts and rolled oats produce a rich and complex traditional stout with hints of liquorice. The bitter malty flavours are enhanced by a moderate bitterness and a rounded late hop aroma is provide by East Kent Goldings.

Cask (Hop & Grain Store, Cambridge)
Black, and with a persistent small tan head. Lovely sweet chocolatey roast aroma. Beautifully rich estery retronasals. Big soft smooth palate - comforts you like a cozy blanket. Taste is beautifully roasted, a touch of chocolate. Roastiness builds up over time, and ends with quite a dry burntness once you’re at the bottom of the glass - but with no astringency at all. Absolutely top stout. Beautiful. Tring deliver yet again.

Cask at the Maypole, Cambridge. Dark brown with a big creamy tan head. That’s how it’s done. Roast coffee, elderberries, brambles in the scent. Simple but balanced bittersweet taste. The mouthfeel is unfortunately incredibly weak, which spoils the whole package that little bit. Very very good of course, but not among the best of beers from this underrated brewery.

On cask at Pheasant Inn, Dunstable. Pours liquorice black with tan head. Decent stout but a little thin to knock it down a peg or two. Enjoyable.

Black with soapy head. Thin, watery body. Has a light roast and a light fruitiness. Not much to this one.
