Plenty of roasted malts and rolled oats produce a rich and complex traditional stout with hints of liquorice. The bitter malty flavours are enhanced by a moderate bitterness and a rounded late hop aroma is provide by East Kent Goldings.

Cask at the Maypole, Cambridge. Dark brown with a big creamy tan head. That’s how it’s done. Roast coffee, elderberries, brambles in the scent. Simple but balanced bittersweet taste. The mouthfeel is unfortunately incredibly weak, which spoils the whole package that little bit. Very very good of course, but not among the best of beers from this underrated brewery.

Black with soapy head. Thin, watery body. Has a light roast and a light fruitiness. Not much to this one.

Cask at the Kings Tun JDW, black with a lasting off-white head and aromas of coffee and fruit. Roast malt, more coffee notes, and hints of blackcurrant and strawberry on the palate. Light bitterness and a touch of treacle toffee.

Tasted this in the Salt Cot, Saltcoats (JDW), on the 9th August 2014. Cask, handpump dispense. Pours ruby black in colour with a thin pale buff head. Cracking malty aroma of dark chocolate and treacle toffee notes but the beer needs to be agitated to get this. Thin oily mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malts give a moist fruitloaf base with syrupy raisin fruit and fresh figs to the fore. There is a hint of earthy hops in the short bitter aftertaste but this is very short lived. Finish is very malty and sweet with fruit full in the mouth, dates, black cherry and black treacle coming through, leaving a fading dried vinous fruit note on the palate. This is a cracking ale and more reminiscent of an Old Ale in style rather than a Stout! Sampled alongside Broughton Dark Dunter which had a better, creamier mouthfeel and only just edged it by a whisker! Worth seeking out if you like the dark ales.

Decent if not great stout. Very dark with beige head. Malty chocolate and coffee with some plum in the background. Starts off great but loses depth after a few mouthfuls.
