Itís officially summer and that means cucumbers are just starting to come into harvest. Cool cukes are such a nice cooling summer treat, and we decided to make a summer Saison with them. Adding ~24lbs of English cucumbers per barrel, and just enough lemon zest to lend an overall brightness to the beer, this recipe is certain to become an epic summer time favorite.

Hazy pale yellow with a creamy white head. Aroma is lemon zest, cucumber, cream cheese. Light bodied, creamy mouthfeel, short finish. Taste is cucumber and cream cheese sandwich. Great beer for high tea.

GABF 2014. Cucumber aroma is prominent. More cucumber in the flavor. Tons of carbonation, some light spice. A very mellow, easy to drink beer that i think would go well with a hot summer afternoon.

Sampled at GABF 2014. Pours a light body with white head and creamy lacing. Aroma is cucumber, cedar, veggies and grass. Mouthfeel is clean and soft with notes of cucumbers, soft pickles, grass, clean malt and light lemon. Nice.

GABF 2014 Rating (Denver, CO). Pours a hazy straw hue, gentle pale glow with gentle haze, frothy whitish head is a bit bubbly and cakey. Mellow lacing. Aromas show some cucumber, cool and earthy, gentle bready malts, straw and earth. Initial is really cucumber, dill and earth. Cool, earthy, a touch bitter and green. A mellow leafy feel. Touches of earth, bread and straw. Middle is a bit sweet, earthy, dill. Weird beer. Backend and finish is a bit bitter, earthy, lingering veggie and dill feel. Meh.

Bottle. Cloudy peach skin hew. Large, pillowy head of whit fizz that pops away after a minute or so. Complex aroma. Earthy, green cucumber, not so much the fresh, refreshing juice -- more the green, slightly vegetal skin. Peppercorns, pear, sea salt. Really like how the veggies work with the underlying saison character. Flavor pretty much replicates the nose, but in a subdued form. A bit sweeter. Carbonation is incredibly high, fizz is a little intense and CO2 bite kind of detracts from the actual beer flavors. A finish of sugar-dusted cucumber slices.

750mL bottle, pours jet black with a small tan / brown head. Aroma is complex, with bourbon, vanilla and cocoa. Flavour is elegant, with boozy bourbon notes, vanilla, and alcoholic finish. Very well-balanced. Surprising quality from the big guys.

Goblet on tap at Colorado Plus. Pours light gold with not much head. Aroma is a little tart with lots of cucumber coming through. Pretty simple and straightforward beer. The flavor is refreshing with real cucumber and a moderate tartness for balance. Some earthy hops are in the finish. Hard to pick out much else. Good summer beer and pleasant to drink.

Draft @ Trinity. Pours hazy light hay. Fluffy white head that falls fast. Aroma is funk, light tartness, and loads of fresh, great cucumbers. Taste is tart, spicy, bread, and again lots of cukes. Very light and refreshing. The vegetable really balances with the tart bite. Great warm weather beer.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilburís Fort Collins for $12.99. Iíve been kind of intrigued about this since it medaled at GABF and finally pulled the trigger on a bottle with a gift certificate I got for Christmas. Slight gusher. Pours a hazy yellow appearance with a lasting, foamy off white head. Definitely a lot of cucumber in the nose along with some melon and herbal/weedy/greeny notes. High carbonation. Twangy, slightly funky, very green/weedy (kind of like a dandelion stem or green herbs), lemon, melon, pickle/cucumber flavor with a slightly acidic flavor. At first not entirely hard to drink, but quickly it becomes kind of annoying and not enjoyable. A novel idea and decent at first, but not something that is worth purchasing a 750mL bottle unless itís being split into multiple glasses at a tasting. Iíd imagine there wouldnít be many repeat purchasers even if itís not bad in small servings.
