Bottle conditioned.
First brewed 1996; claimed to be based on a recipe from 1679 which used wheat, oat and barley.
Tripel Karmeliet is a very refined and complex golden-to-bronze brew with a fantastic creamy head. These characteristics derive not only from the grains used but also from restrained hopping with Styrians and the fruity nature (banana and vanilla) of the house yeast. Aroma has hints of vanilla mixed with citrus aromas. Tripel Karmeliet has not only the lightness and freshness of wheat, but also the creaminess of oats together with a spicy lemony almost quinine dryness.

Nose: citrus fruits, malt, clove and hint of banana. Taste: one word, balance. Sweet, citrus, acid, malt. Flat carbonation. Medium to thin bodies. 8% abv mix quite well with the beer. Doesn’t hv the strong alcohol taste. Aftertaste: short with some spice. Great beer.

330 ml bottle bb 20/06/18, at Känguruh Pub, Vienna.
Orange, cloudy body, with a big, stable, frothy, lacing, white head.
Aroma of spices, vanilla, bread, banana, oranges, some dried fruits.
Taste follows this, with dough and slight lemongrass.
Medium, oily mouthfeel, with a quite fizzy carbonation.
Finishes spicy, dry, yeasty, bready, a bit sweet.

Nice one, although not as special as expected. Well balanced and pretty easy for the ABV, but I’m missing some more diversity. Also the wheat notes are a bit too dominant for my liking, but that’s just a matter of taste. Overall not among my favourite style examples.

Floral and hoppy aroma. Hazy yellow color with medium head. Taste of fruit, malt, alcohol was balanced well. Typical belgium triple ale.

UPDATED: SEP 1, 2016 Truly one of the best beers out there. Beautiful white, very fine foam. Extremely balanced: sweetness, acidity, creaminess, carbonisation, bitterness are never screaming for attention, yet are all contributing to the mix. Vanilla, lemon zest, subtle coriander, citrus, banana, yeast. Extremely smooth and satisfying. Never disappointed with this one.

On tap at Archive for Armakeggon 2016. Fruity with hints of banana and clove, lingering alcohol warmth, not bad.

Tulip glass from a tap at Barley’s in Greenville SC (from 2012 notes). A: Pours a bright, pale honey/golden color, with a small-to-moderate size, exceptionally creamy head. Head has good retention, at least as a ring. S&T: Light and fruity, although no specific fruit comes to the fore. Clove and banana elements, but less pronounced than in some tripels. Honey too. The aroma is a bit boozy, but in a positive way ... think fine brandy or liqueur. M: Very smooth, with a bit of alcohol warming. Nice, light carbonation. Overall: One of the best tasting tripels I have ever had. Complex and flavorful, but not challenging. Very refined. Makes an excellent sipper, and I took a good long time to finish my serving, enjoying every sip.
