First brewed 1996; claimed to be based on a recipe from 1679 which used wheat, oat and barley.
Tripel Karmeliet is a very refined and complex golden-to-bronze brew with a fantastic creamy head. These characteristics derive not only from the grains used but also from restrained hopping with Styrians and the fruity nature (banana and vanilla) of the house yeast. Aroma has hints of vanilla mixed with citrus aromas. Tripel Karmeliet has not only the lightness and freshness of wheat, but also the creaminess of oats together with a spicy lemony almost quinine dryness.

33 cl bottle shared two ways. Light hazy golden pour. Lots of yeast, spices, raisins and grains on the nose. Taste is yeasty with sweet honey, some herbal notes and light banana candy.

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2016 Au fût. Couleur jaune clair. Mousse peu abondante. Arômes de fruits. Bouche, d’abord bien fraiche puis de nombreuses goûts fruités : citron, banane, raisin, ananas ... Arrière bouche moyennement longue avec peu d’amertume. Bonne triple sans arrière-pensée de génial/beer ! Je goûterai en bouteille pour comparaison !

This is the best of old Belgium/Kempen brewing traditions in a bottle of glass. Refreshing, a bit spicy, wheats, dry, a tad of lemon. Long-lasting aftertaste. Among the very best of European beers.

@bartlebier’s comprehensive tripel-tasting, bierhandlung, 1/16. Absolutely admirable how this lovely bergamotte-citrus aroma and taste must have been acquired without the actual spice additions. Accompagnied by hints of anise/staranise, with the oats making for a silky mouthfeel. Dry finish. High art.

2014 Reserva Vintage, 150cl Magnum bottle cellared for Biere mit Stil 1: Worldwide Tripel Tasting@Bierhandlung Freiburg JAN2016. - - Sweet lemon rind and lemon balm/melissa, buttered oat biscuits and buttermilk, vanilla almond porridge and orange rind - depending on the type and size of container (kegged in Strasbourg or De Kust; big-bottled at home, smaller sizes in between) this 3-grain tripel, like many masterpieces, has many hues and dayshapes. Might have been even creamier and a tad less sweet back in 2007-8 when this was my drink of choice for a spell, but I really can’t tell. No soapy coriander in this big ripened bottle, matured and mellowed to full complexity. Great balance of rich, natural grain fruitiness and an almost culinary display of hop zest and apéritif dryness. Up there with the best fresh & frühlingshafte non-phenolic tripels along with Chimay Blance and Gouden Carolus. (Might tone this down a bit once I get over what a fitting apotheosis downing a full glass of it was to conclude a series of 15-odd worldwide tripels.)

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Bright amber/gold with a creamy head. Complex mix of aromas; lemon, caramel, cereal and vanilla. Taste is more complex still, very fruity and thirst-quenching but also full-bodied and sweet. Lovely long, dry finish. Everything I need from a beer.

This is one of the best belgian beer ever. Sometimes irregular on tap but all the same good flavor and taste in bottle. Everybody can like this beer even with the high ABV. Nice gold color and a thick head of beer.
