All the attributes of an American India Pale Ale but it’s black. Do your eyes deceive you? Have you fallen down the rabbit hole? Take in the fresh pine hop aroma then savour the complex malt palate typical of an IPA but then come the subtle hints of dark chocolate and liquorice to give the game away. This is not a heavy beer but smooth and incredibly drinkable, a new beer style worthy of praise. Drink me!

Cask conditioned at Moreton in Marsh Beer Fest ’12. Very dark brown with cream head. The initial flavours are of rich roasty dry malts, some liquorice, some husky coffee hints then zinging in from left field comes the hops, twangy tangerine, spruce needles, loganberry, challenging the malts to a fight. An absolute belter in my book and worthy of a high mark from me.

Fat @ Akkurat, Stockholm. Halleluja!

Hoppy roasted aroma, metal, cocoa, hay, pine needles, caramel, chocolate, apricot, citrus, lemongrass, perfume, pine apple, some peach and mango. Hoppy fruity flavor, roasted, cocoa, caramel, pine, apricot, pine needles, mango, pine apple, hay, cocoa powder, licorice notes, roasted, some bitter chocolate. Just about a perfect black IPA. Really good.

Cask Gravity (Newport Ale House, Newport, Isle of Wight) - Black in colour. Liquorice, pine, grapefruit, roasted malt and plain chocolate in the aroma. Slightly soapy taste with salty liquorice, roasted malt and pine all standing out. Very nice.

Gravity dispense at Ascot Racecourse Beer Festival 2012 - 06/10/12. Dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head. Big pine nose allied to bitter grapefruit and hops. Hoppy piney taste with a little dark roast malt and chocolate in the background. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation leading to a dry finish. Another great black IPA from a British brewer!
