Cask conditioned at Moreton in Marsh Beer Fest ’12. Very dark brown with cream head. The initial flavours are of rich roasty dry malts, some liquorice, some husky coffee hints then zinging in from left field comes the hops, twangy tangerine, spruce needles, loganberry, challenging the malts to a fight. An absolute belter in my book and worthy of a high mark from me.

Fat @ Akkurat, Stockholm. Halleluja!

Cask at the Nags Head, Reading. Pours a deep magohany with a chstnut gleam against the light and a loose, scummy, cream head; the aroma is deeply hoppy, but not as piney as promised; in the mouth it’s dry with a spicy hop flavour and underlying rich malts; with the hops carrying through to the end leaving a touch of liquorice on the finish. Good, but lacking the extremes of some Black IPAs.

Cask @ Akkurat. Pours dark brown, almost black, with a very small head that doesn’t leave any trace worth mentioning on the glass. Smell is slightly sweet, fruity and malty with dark bread, toasted malts, peaches, pineapple, freshly cut grass, earl gray tea and hints of coffee. Taste is tiny sweet, tiny sour and bitter with roasted malts, tropical fruit juice, grapes, pine, grapefruit juice, wood, pine, soap and liquorice root. Mouthfeel is smooth, tiny watery, flat and light to medium bodied. Finish is bitter and fruity with roasted malts, tropical fruits, pine, dark bread, moist soil, wood, lemon zest and orange zest.
