Cask: Special - JDW Spring Festival, 2011
This new, American pale-ale-style beer has been brewed exclusively for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. It is pale in colour, with bold, fruity, citrus aromas and a touch of malty sweetness in the flavour, developing into a bitterness which lingers in the mouth, right through to the clean, dry finish.

Cask, William Wygston, Wigston. Golden with a white foam. Aromas are spritzy lemon and grapefruit with yeast and hints of banana. Fresh with some woody green pine. Flavours are sweet lemon barley water with a zesty citrus bite. Tart towards the finish with pithy grapefruit bitterness and underlying pineapple sweetness. Dry on the aftertaste. Good.

Cask Conditioned handpump Moon On The Square Northampton. A golden beer with a white head and lacing. Lovely citrus notes in the nose leading to some spicy prickly hops in the mouth. A touch of sweet toffee late on on the aroma. It’s nice.

Imitation American pal ale which is ineffective and dry in the palate. Needs more thought.

UPDATED: APR 1, 2011 1) The Baron of Stinckley. Bright orange gold with a tidy white collar. Sweet, perfumed hop aroma suggesting melon/white musk and cranberry handwash. At last a trace of quality here; lace freckles, passion fruit and strawberry chew, generous bittering finish with a cashew and oatmeal aftertaste taking the edge off the IBUs- which are considerable. Manages to pack some of the aromatics, exotic fruit, soap and biscuit sweetness of a decent US PA or even IPA into a bitesize third measure of English golden ale. Bless them. 2) Had it again at The Larry last night, and it was just as good. Beer of The Festival So Far by a mile.
