CaptainCougar (7129) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - DEC 17, 2007
Sampled at the second annual Bistro’s West Coast Barrel Aged Beer Fest, 13% abv aged on American oak for 8 months originally brewed in 2006: Pours an oily transparent dark mahogany with a thin ring of light tan head. Aroma of big licorice, oak and milk chocolate with some sweet earthy dark caramel notes. Starts rich and malty sweet with some fresh earthy oaky notes and plum complexity toward a drier mildly warming finish. A pretty nicely aged oaky barleywine.

22 oz, Free GABF sample. Dark brown. Some malt goodness (chocolate) and tropical fruit in the nose, along with a bit of oxidation. Flavor is fairly balanced, but a bit dull. Mild hints of chocolate and caramel along with a light hint of hops on the finish. A pretty good BW.

Tap @ Toronado Barley Wine Festival and last weekend I had it on tap at the brewery. This was brewed in 2001 and aged well. At the brewpub I drew a glass from the last keg they had. Festival Rating (9, 4, 8, 4, 18): dark mahogany color with a brown head. Strong fruit nose, wood, vinous, and cherry. Brewpub rating (7, 5, 8, 4, 17): mahogany color with a lush tan head. Oak wood and hops leap to the front. Dark vinous fruits and cherry. Lots of wood. This beer took 4th place at the festival.
