COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
To appeal to the hard drinking populace of Czarist Russia, English brewers developed this very strong (9% abv) and rich style of beer. Black and viscous, and heavily hopped, it became a favorite of the Imperial court, from which it takes its name.

Location: Draft at the Brewpub - Princeton, 4/21/13

Aroma: It has a chocolaty nose, fairly sweet, with some lighter roast notes as well
Appearance: This one pours a dark brown color with a heavy tan head and coating lace
Flavor: The taste is medium sweet and chocolaty, balanced by some light bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, it has a fairly creamy feel, and it comes off as rather easy to drink
Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty good one. It’s a solid example of the style, and a nice beer. I certainly didn’t have any complaints.

I had this on tap at the Princeton location. It was served in a snifter, which was nice to see. The color is a completely opague black with a tan head. Lacing lasts a long time. Hay fever had my sinuses a bit stuffed up, so I wasn’t able to get as much aroma as I should but what I got was predominatly roasted malt. Flavor was also chocolatey roasted barley. It was served a pretty cold, but even as it warmed the alcohol stayed well in the background. All in all a very good Imperial Stout.

Root beer brew with browned creme top. Exceptionally hoppy nose for an imperial stout, but otherwise, the malting seems subdued, or even flat. Pleasant chocolate roast barley flavors wind through the palate, with the hop flavor more balanced than the aroma would indicate. Well crafted to conceal the potency.

On tap at brewpub. Pours deep opaque black with a thick tan head. Aroma of chocolate, and chalky roasted malt. Flavor of sweet rich malt, chocolate, coffee and alcohol. A medium mouthfeel, that is crisp and smooth. A nice well balanced easy drinking stout.

Draught in Philly location: This was served in a snifter. It poured an inky, opaque brown color. There was a fairly substantial creamy tan head on it. It has a nice nose. Some chocolate, roastiness and citrus hops. The taste is good, but perhaps a little light for a RIS. Chocolate notes, some roastiness. The taste is just a touch bitter in the finish. Nice.

Draft. Pours a black body with a tan head. Malty chocolate notes, molasses, sweet with some light lactose notes. Some light wood and smoky tones. Vinous with some dark esters and a slick warming finish. Good beer.
