Long ago in Bavaria, they made two kinds of beer: helles (pale) and dunkel (dark). If you think all dark beers are roasty and rough, you're in for a surprise. Bottom fermentation and extended lagering smooth out the rough edges so that anyone can slam a dunkel.

deep brown pour with a large fluffy white head, aromas were sweet, carame and banana. i loved the flavor, a nice balance of caramel and citrusy hops, a very crisp mouthfeel and well balanced aftertaste.

Draft with Nitrogen - Pours dark brown with a creamy head. Smells of caramel, bread. Taste is sweet and lightly biter, malty, a little nutty. Thick mouthfeel.

Tap in Princeton. Poured brown with a sizable white head. More foamy then anything else. Smell had grain, herbal tea, caramel and coffee. Taste was kind of bitter for my taste considering the style. Pretty good but one dimensional.

On tap at Triumph. Pours a clear dark. Malty front that disappeared quickly. Clean mouthfeel with slight hop fruitiness.

Aroma of yeast. First taste is kind of unremarkable maltiness with a hint of sourness. Beer only has redeeming qualities with the finish, where some nice roastiness comes out. All in all, not as big or flavorful as I’d like a dunkel. Eh.

Tap - Princeton - Poured light amber in color with little head. Slight toasty malt sweetness in the nose. Hops subdued, almost nonexistent keeping within the style. A bit on the bitter side in the finish and a bit thin for my taste. Will rerate next time its up.

Wow, this one surprised me as there was (thankfully, for me) no roasty/toasty/smoky flavor or aroma. Instead, this tasted much like one of the finer examples of an "American Dark Lager" with some caramel sweetness, and light hopping. The coloring is dark and the aroma leans towards malty. Slighty bitter in the after, there was also something nutty and biscuity about this beer. I like it.

Draft at the Philly brewery. Pours a deep but clear brown with an off-white head. Aroma and flavor had some pretty nice malty bread-crust tones if you looked hard enough, but the beer was so over-carbonated that it mostly just reminded me of Alka-Seltzer. Not really enjoyable.
