Long ago in Bavaria, they made two kinds of beer: helles (pale) and dunkel (dark). If you think all dark beers are roasty and rough, you're in for a surprise. Bottom fermentation and extended lagering smooth out the rough edges so that anyone can slam a dunkel.

#1000 at the Stoudt’s MicroFest, could not have picked a better brewery to celebrate this with, excellent dunkel, deep brown in color with a nice off-white head, lots of malt in the nose, hints of banana & caramel in the flavors, dark chocolate in the finish, very smooth & drinkable, great dunkel

Oh tap at Philly location. Pours a nice deep amber, light brown with light carbonation, yet a frothy sticky lasting beige head, and some good lace. Aroma is toasty and biscuity with tons of medium toast munich, sweet bready doughy malts, and hints of chocolate. Warm toasty bready flavor with more munich, with almost a sharp sweetness, cut by the acrid chocolate and dark malt hints. Good full body and mouthfeel for the style. Very smooth and easy to drink. One of the best Dunkels I have had. Similar to Ayinger.

Draft. Brown pour with tan head fruit, spice and some dark malt aromas. Flavors are similarly sweet and malt based. Nice beer.

Bold smelling munich malts reach their pinnacle in a toasted grain, bready medley. The body is clear light amber, the head fierce and lasting. Pleasantly biscuity malts walk into coffee territory fast, deciding to spend more time in the cereal neighbourhood. Really cracker like, with a bite of floral and earthy hops added. Almost smoky undertones. Medium bodied, a bit sweet, but the balance remains great except for a slightly watery finish.

Clear, shiny copper body with a pillowy off-white head. Nice malty aroma with grape and apple notes plus sweet toffee and toasted bread crusts. Pleasant yeast profile with subtle floral hops. Medium sweet, malty flavor is lightly grainy with toast and fruit characters. Emergent, grainy bitterness. Smooth and palatable. A good American dunkel and another solid session beer from Triumph.

Wow, this one surprised me as there was (thankfully, for me) no roasty/toasty/smoky flavor or aroma. Instead, this tasted much like one of the finer examples of an "American Dark Lager" with some caramel sweetness, and light hopping. The coloring is dark and the aroma leans towards malty. Slighty bitter in the after, there was also something nutty and biscuity about this beer. I like it.
