COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Old time brewers in Germany made a malty, high gravity beer in March (Maerzen) which they consumed with great ceremony in the fall. The coincidence of a royal betrothal in the autumn of 1810 gave Bavarian beer lovers ample justification for the two-week long bash known as Oktoberfest.

Tap at the brewery. Pours clear amber with a small, frothy white head, short retention with light lacing. Aroma is toast and cookie malt, dates, earthy and spicy hops. Flavor is malt dominant with medium hops and bitterness, a clean lager character and a sweet finish. Medium body and carbonation.

On tap at the Lehigh Valley Brew Fest ’04. Poured a medium orange color with a small off white head. Aroma and tastes of malts, toffee, and bread. Maybe I’m just bored of Oktobefests now, but this seems like every other one I’ve had lately (not bad, but nothing too special).

On tap at the New Hope location:

The Lure:
Grapefruit and peach pits stick to the caramel malts. Fresh fruity pulp is present, but nothing special to distract you from daydreaming.

The Festivities:
Light peachiness accompanies the nameless hop presence. Well-made malt structure doesn’t yield much to talk about in this easy to down pint.

Transcendence:
The football game is on I think.

Growler courtesy of JB175. Pours copper with a reddish tint and a nice sustained white head. Smells of caramel, dough, wildflowers, light tea. Tastes spicy and lightly bitter with a touch of citrus and a dry malty finish.

Clear medium amber, small white cover. Strikingly grainy nose, remotely bready and toasty as well, but the graininess does not have the usual freshness I associate with vienna malts and thus contrasts more than complement the rather hoppy nature, mostly focusing on bitterness than finishing aromas. Unusual..

Draft. Pours golden amber with an off white head. Toasty aroma with lightly sweet malts. The flavor is clean and clear, with toast, bread, and toffee. Nice.

(11/10/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in Philadelphia. Clear amber color. Aroma of toasted malt and caramel. Sweet toasty flavor with some bread and caramel. A bit drier in the finish. Medium-bodied.

Draft pint at the Philadelphia brewpub. Reddish amber with a thin gluey head. Classical middle-of-the-road caramel malt. Medium hop tingle. Nicely balanced, but just an average O-fest. (#3183, 11/8/2007)
