COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Thanks whoever sent me this. Pours a very murky ruddy brownish. One finger tan head. Nice malty aroma, sweet, light citrusy hops, grapefruit peel, caramel, a little aged. Nice caramel, sweet, grapefruit peel flavor, waxy mouthfeel, not overpowering, well hidden alcohol. Very nice BW.

Courtesy of mj. Beautiful dark mahogany with a high beige head. Hoppy piney nose with caramel and dark fruits. Flavor is also heavily hopped with notes of pine, tropical fruits, dark toffee, grapefruit, big woodiness. Pleasantly sweet, smooth bitterness/resinousness. Full to medium bodied with a smooth texture and subtle carbonation. Very good!

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark amber body with a tight bubbled creamy beige head that retained as a thin covering. The nose is big caramel malt with a nice accent of resiny hops. The flavor is really well balanced with heavy caramel malt and a nice resiny hoppiness that cuts the sweetness really well. Great lingering burnt caramel finish. Mouthfeel is great, full and soft with zero stickiness and perfect soft carbonation. Clearly the best of the Scratch beers to date that I’ve had. This was just so well balanced and easy drinking. Should have gotten a case of this.

If you have a case of this talk to me. I want it. I could drink this beer all the time. It was very similar to GI IIPA but a little less in your face, which can be a good thing. Huge hoppage aroma and flavor. Undoubtedly simcoe if my memory serves me correct. Great malt backbone to really balance it out. Delicous. Must get more.

Bottle courtesy of hopdog. Thanks Steve! Dark, ruddy brown pour. Nose starts off rather medicinal then reveals big hop notes and citrus oils. Taste is VERY hoppy and oily with lots of citrus peel, pine cones and grapefruit juice. Some light malt notes and soft cocoa round this out. Body is medium-full with mild carbonation. There’s lots of lingering bitterness and oiliness to this as well. Ends with more hops, citrus peel, grapefruit juice and sweet malts. Touches of caramel come through as does some melon. Very nice!
