COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Pours a dark reddish brown with medium khaki head. The aroma is sweet malt, caramel, spicy, floral, and slightly fruity. The taste is really well balanced between malt and hops with a really nice firm hop bitterness. This is a quite enjoyable barley wine.

Pours a musty pastel-crimson, with a couple fingers of puffy, lacy, off-white head. Smells of sugary malts and piny hops, with notes of chocolate, caramel, soy, and even some pipe-tobacco. Taste starts with the sugary malts, with hints of birch, then segues into juniper hops before easing back into sweet chocolate and caramel. The finish is slightly bitter and hoppy. This beer feels more carbonated than it appears, and has a lingering, sappy mouthfeel. A very... dynamic beer.

Draft. Poured dark brown with a medium-sized light tan head. Aroma and flavor were caramel, toffee, some dark dried fruits and candy sugar, a hint of banana, touch of spice and wood. Slightly thick mouthfeel. Warming but not overly boozy.

Rating from 2011. [Bottle, at least 14 months old] Pours hazy deep reddish-brown with a a nice tan head that diminishes but does not disappear. Lots of strawberry jam, slight alcohol, fruitiness (I got lightly spiced pears in the beginning and by the end of the bottle I was smelling guava, so not sure where to go with that), and a touch of lemon zest and black pepper. Very nice, but not amazing. Big jamminess, alcohol is more prominent, light nuttiness, caramel, quite malt heavy towards the end. A surprising amount of oxidation showing already. Great mouthfeel—thick, smooth, long finish. Easy 5. Nice, but falls short a few ways. Age has not been kind to it, with the oxidation showing through to a surprising degree. It is also too hot in the taste. Great mouthfeel though.

Appearance is a medium cream head with a deep amber. Aroma is a little sweet. Taste is strong with a balance between the sweeter malts and bitter hops. Overall pretty solid.

From tap. Light malty aroma. Dark appearance with thin white head. Good malt and hop balance. Floral hop and caramel malt taste. Light bitter finish. Pretty good beer for the price on draft.

burn raisin, cherries, cheese cake, moderately sweet with a touch of chocolate. Moderately aggressively bitter finish.

Pours amber-mahogany into the glass, with an initially fluffy head that reduces, leaving webbed lacing. The nose is dark dried fruits, caramel and toffee. Flavors are similar, lots of toffee, raisin, bitters, alcohol, wood and spruce. The mouthfeel is sticky with a full body. The alcohol finish lends itself to a great nightcap here, and what a great time to enjoy, the mountainous blistery winter. Wonderful brew!

Poured a cloudy mahogany color with a light tan head. Aroma is earthy, leaves, floral, citrus, caramel, and a very faint banana smell. Taste is bitter citrus, molasses, pine, nuts, chocolate, and a bitter, boozey finish.

Very bitter hops. I love barley wine, and Flying Mouflan is typical in it’s well defined uncorrupted hop and malt flavors, but this isn’t my favorite. Finishes smoother than it starts.
