COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Pours a ruddy brown with hints of orange gleaming around the edges. Aroma is piney and resinous, with a brown sugar, malty backbone. Flavor is much more hop forward than I particularly like in a BW. Alcohol becomes evident on the finish, warming on the way down. Nice.

12oz bottle from BrianK. Thanks dude. Served in my reidel snifter. Pours cloudy brown with a nice half finger head. The nose is floral with a bit of a hoppy edge. Taste is sweet but bitter with a citrus feeling to it. Overall pretty nice but thin on the palate and oddly bitter on some levels. Lets see how it warms up.

Bottle@Home. Not very strong aroma, black currant, wet clothes and some coffee can be found. Dark ruby color, beige fine head, good lace. Very sweet, very bitter, very fruity, licorice wood, quite complex flavours. Full with a dry finish. Nice complexity but lot the balance a bit.

Aroma of citrus and pine hops with big caramel malt and a distinct, odd sort of sweet aroma, really sweet fruit or yogurt or something... Flavor also had some very sweet dessert notes, maybe in the area of praline, in addition to more of the nice hopping and more expected rich caramel malt. There was also an odd side to the flavor with some meaty notes for me as well. This beer was kind of all over the place for me, even the praline notes seemed out of place somehow, though pleasant in its own right. A lot of good stuff, and nothing terribly bad-tasting, but left me more confused than anything.

Hazy bronze, reddish highlights, thick, fizzy head is darker than you would expect. Resiny aromas of sweet honey, pine and blueberry. Large malt body, perhaps slightly oxidized, with a bit of citrus in the finish and a thin, dry bitter aftertaste. Definite alcohol warmth on the way down.

22 oz bottle from the Ratebeer Tasting. Pours a dark brownish near opaque hue, dark, a small offwhite head laces fairly well. Aromas are fruity, pear and apple with a touch citrus, some light spicy yeast with a touch of stibk. Ighjt, yeast, a nice fruity fairly boozy ale.with some light spive, fairly good bitterness. Finish is largely sweet and yeast, with a decent bitterness.

Bottle. 25.4 oz. Split with Vinny. Pours a deep, hazy mahogany with a rich, beige head. Aroma of vanilla, barley, candied brown sugar, caramel, honey, raisins, bread, and heavy amounts of sweet malts. Body is full and heavy, with a rather bitter palate. This brew had the distinct nose of a barley wine, but the flavor did not nearly match the aroma. Perhaps Troegs decided to over-hop this brew in an attempt at experimentation, but it comes off as either an overly saccharin IPA or an extremely bitter, tight barley wine. Average brew.

The sweet malty smell is typical of a barleywine, but cuts the booziness nicely. The appearance is ruby amber but not much of a head. The flavor is sweet, malty, and smoother than the norm which is why I believe it is weel respected as a barleywine.
