COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Aroma is a wonderful scent of ruby red grapefruits, with a touch of caramel coming out after the initial surge. Pours a clear, dark red, with just a dusting of head. Slick mouthfeel, touch of biscuit malts, and low carbonation. This beer starts with caramel notes, blending into pine and grapefruit, with a long bitter finish. The alcohol is amazingly well hidden. Quite a tasty beer, and one I want to grab some to lay down and see how it is in a year or two.

Bottle: Thanks, Matt. Rich caramel colored body, semi-clear with a quickly fading khaki head. Aroma of toasted toffee coated prunes, caramel, & some mild papery oxidation. Flavor has the same unfortunate oxidation, a little cardboard here & there, but it actually subsides a bit with some time/warmth. Slightly metallic & sweet caramel notes, toffee, toast, with more earthy & ashy hops towards the finish, along with ripe prunes & dates.

Bottle, shared with my wife and phantomhennes. Lovely red-orange amber, creamy light gold head. Deep toffee malts, a touch toasty, and ripe tropical fruit character. Finish is bitter, with some green leafy hop character. Full bodied, malty and delicious.

2012 Bottle - thanks Sean! Pours clear deep ruby chestnut, medium creamy tan head that lasts a long time and laces well. Aroma is very malty, rich toffee, molasses, some dark bread, a bit earthiness. Flavor is medium sweet and light plus bitter, very malty, toffee and toasted caramel, pumpernickle, some pine from the bittering hops. Full body, creamy mouthfeel, some lingering bitterness. A bit hot. This bad boy has held up pretty well!

2012 bottle. Dark red/brown pour with a light khaki head. Aromas of sweet malts with notes of hops although the hops have faded this one seems to have been aged well. Flavor is sweet malts upfront with notes of fig and dates. Nice caramel notes in the finish. Pretty tasty brew. Bottle from chuckaduck, thanks again man!

It has a dark reddish brown body with a thick two finger light tan head on top. Head retention is very good and it makes thick lace rings on the glass as I take each sip. The aroma has a full character with strong base maltiness with candy sweet notes, brown sugar and caramel notes. Hops are a little more laid back and offer a light balance of leafy/floral and lighter citrus/pine. Malt sweetness comes through overall in a big full body with a decent hop punch backing it all up. I get notes of roasted grain, candy, sugar and white bread crust mixed with mild spice like pine and deep earthy/leafy hop bitterness. A smooth texture with mellow carbonation rounds out the feel.

2010 bomber - dark pour with off white head. Sudsy residual. Nose is malty with some hops still peeking through. Taste is sweet malt with some residual bittering hops. Figs, dates and caramel as well. Pretty good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Transfer from BA review on 5-29-12 - Poured from bottle into snifter Appearance – Pours a beautiful deep ruby nearly mahogany color. Upon pouring there is a wonderful big billowy orange tinted head on the brew. The head fades slowly over time to give a very medium level of lacing. Smell – The smell is a wonderful blend of sweet and hop. There is a bready base that has nice fruit aromas of cherry, tangerine and banana as well as some brown sugar aroma. The hop aromas are biggest citrus but have hints of floral aromas mixed within. Taste – The taste starts out very malty and sweet. The malt is more doughy with the sweetness being heavy in fruit flavors mixed with a toffee taste. The fruits start out as cherry and banana in nature, but then start to take on a more tangerine flavor as hops start coming onto the tongue. More toward the middle of the taste, the hops really start coming on strong with a good dose of grapefruit and lemon citrus mixed with a light pine hop. These hop flavors get quite strong more toward the end the taste experience, but never really overpower the sweeter/maltier flavors and instead blend very well with them. At the very end of the taste some alcohol flavors come to the tongue and give a slightly warming feeling. Mouthfeel – A wonderfully creamy and thick body coat the mouth as the lower level of carbonation tingles the tongue ever so lightly. The light tingle of the carbonation does well for all the hop flavor, while the thickness of the brew allows all those malty and sweet base tastes of the brew to really sit on the tongue. Overall – This is a nice tasty brew. It has very nice robust aroma, taste, and warming/creamy feel. It is very satisfying and enjoyable; great for sitting back in a recliner and sipping away.

22 oz. bottle, batch 320 bottled in May 2012. Brown color with ruby highlights around the edges when held to the light. After two years still a proper carbonation level. Aroma is sweet with dark fruit, sweet bread, pine hops and light fruit.

Flavor of figs, caramel dipped raisins, candy sugar upfront with a nice Amarillo, Cascade / piney hop balance. Nicely balanced because the piney with citrus hops still comes through the sweetness. Slight warming after the sip without any alcohol distraction. Body is medium to heady with a lightly syrupy texture without being sticky. The depth of flavor really surprised me. Nice layer of complexity, great brew.

Bottle. Thanks! A: Dark mahogany with a light cappuccino head. Decent lacing. N: Toffee, rye bread, pine, caramel, and a hint of vanilla and licorice. Tree bark, and peppercorn. A touch of bubble gum floating around in here. T: Spicy, bitter, and moderately sweet. M: Sticky, medium to heavy body. Alcohol is well-hidden. O: A peppery barleywine with hops to spare. I can’t say how I actually feel about it, though. I tend to prefer more sweetness, but this has a nice balance. I would just like something less spicy.
