COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

Appearance is of muddy water / ice tea. Smells of malt.. maybe of some berry and dark chocolate? Very smooth, even for 9.3%. A little boozy on the aftertaste. Initially, I got some malt, dark chocolate or some type of candy? Maybe caramel and bread. Very solid barley wine.

Pours a hazy reddish brown. Aromas of hops, caramel malts, kind of medicinal. Flavor is to strong for me, big alcohol taste, malty with a citrus taste.

From notes. Enjoyed at the 3rd Annual Barleywine Tasting at Travis’s house on February 20. 500 mL bottle. The pour is a nicely bright medium brown with a small khaki head that fades down rather quickly. The aroma is interesting. There is a decent amount of dark fruits and a lingering caramel sweetness. I’m also getting a little oxidation with this one. There is a little sweet malt that picks up and keeps a little bit of a metallic bit to them. The flavors are very similar. It’s got a little oxidized thing going on in front of the malt and the light presence of dark fruit. There is a little bit more metallic tendency here in this one, which isn’t awful, but it’s certainly not good. The mouth feel is decently thick, with a sharper carbonation and a strange lingeringly hoppy aftertaste. There is a little sweet malt there, but it’s very interesting. Not in a great way. The one thing I’m not so crazy about this on is the definite lack of complexity.

500 mL bottle. Very malty, but the hops may have faded with age. Still some booze there, though. Not very complex, but it does the trick.

Bottle: Thanks, Matt. Rich caramel colored body, semi-clear with a quickly fading khaki head. Aroma of toasted toffee coated prunes, caramel, & some mild papery oxidation. Flavor has the same unfortunate oxidation, a little cardboard here & there, but it actually subsides a bit with some time/warmth. Slightly metallic & sweet caramel notes, toffee, toast, with more earthy & ashy hops towards the finish, along with ripe prunes & dates.

Pours dark caramel with a decent cream colored head. Lots of dried fruit and caramel / toffee in the nose and flavor.

Bottle, shared with my wife and phantomhennes. Lovely red-orange amber, creamy light gold head. Deep toffee malts, a touch toasty, and ripe tropical fruit character. Finish is bitter, with some green leafy hop character. Full bodied, malty and delicious.

2012 Bottle - thanks Sean! Pours clear deep ruby chestnut, medium creamy tan head that lasts a long time and laces well. Aroma is very malty, rich toffee, molasses, some dark bread, a bit earthiness. Flavor is medium sweet and light plus bitter, very malty, toffee and toasted caramel, pumpernickle, some pine from the bittering hops. Full body, creamy mouthfeel, some lingering bitterness. A bit hot. This bad boy has held up pretty well!

2012 bottle. Dark red/brown pour with a light khaki head. Aromas of sweet malts with notes of hops although the hops have faded this one seems to have been aged well. Flavor is sweet malts upfront with notes of fig and dates. Nice caramel notes in the finish. Pretty tasty brew. Bottle from chuckaduck, thanks again man!

It has a dark reddish brown body with a thick two finger light tan head on top. Head retention is very good and it makes thick lace rings on the glass as I take each sip. The aroma has a full character with strong base maltiness with candy sweet notes, brown sugar and caramel notes. Hops are a little more laid back and offer a light balance of leafy/floral and lighter citrus/pine. Malt sweetness comes through overall in a big full body with a decent hop punch backing it all up. I get notes of roasted grain, candy, sugar and white bread crust mixed with mild spice like pine and deep earthy/leafy hop bitterness. A smooth texture with mellow carbonation rounds out the feel.

2010 bomber - dark pour with off white head. Sudsy residual. Nose is malty with some hops still peeking through. Taste is sweet malt with some residual bittering hops. Figs, dates and caramel as well. Pretty good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
