COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Flying Mouflan was #4 in the "Scratch Beer Series" begun by John and Chris Trogner and their brewing staff in 2007, producing one-offs based on recipes the brothers developed in the mid-’90s when they were considering opening a brewpub rather than a production brewery. The medal-win in Denver last October convinced the brothers to make the barleywine-style ale the first beer to come out of the Scratch program and be added to the production roster.

I love this beer! I’ve tried a few of the scratch series, after not hearing the best reviews, but this barley wine is wonderful! Hops and sugary malt aroma. The flavor of hops dominates, which I really enjoy in this style. Happy when I see a BW without too much sweetness, but just enough.

Bottle courtesy of BA’er @Casey3236. Pours a mostly opaque deep nutty brown, with hints of rich woody red. Creamy tan head that held pretty well before fading into a medium collar and a few wisps. Sticky legs and good lacing. Aroma is molasses, deep earthy malt, woody, some leathery damp soil. Taste is dark caramel, nutti-chocolate with some almond like toastiness, leather and earth. Rich mouthfeel, full bodied and low to medium carbonation. I think I aged this one a bit too long, or maybe not long enough. That dirt-like flavor is a little off putting.

bottle dated 4/11 pour to snifter..dark caramel brown color..slight head..decent amount of carbonation..bit of floating particles abound when held up to light..nose is sweet molasses..brown sugar..caramel..skor bar..mouthfeel has got that sweet barleywine presence with a healthy dose of figjam..quite smooth for the high abv..medium bodied to full bodied for sure..does have some coffee flavor profile similarities. have had this on draft before and this is clearly more tame..more mellow and a good sipper for colder months..

Deep brown with 1 finger foamy tan head. Lots of dark fruit and toffee in the nose. Flavor is heavy on the dark fruit. Opens sweet, dark fruit in the middle, somewhat hoppy finish. Nice and smooth. Pretty good, not world class.

Thanks to rowingbrewer for this extra, cheers Mark! Vintage 2010 A: Pours a slightly hazy burnt fire orange ale. The ale presents with a two finger peanut head which falls to medium sheet of the same. spotty on sheeting lace here. S: Whew! Sharp one here. Plenty of hops fell into this kettle. The alcohol is sharp here as well. The beer is gonna be bitter and spicy on the palate (smells like warrior, columbus, simcoe). Very hardcore nose. T: Malt, pepper, savory, brown sugar, molasses, hints of cardboard oxidation (good here). The beer is hoppy still. I think this beer would take two years and it would develop a fantastic flavor. The malt profile is deep, toffee, caramel, coffees, cocoas, burnt sugar all fight for the balance and will finalize their hierarchy over time. Wish I had another for the cellar. M: Full body with low carbonation. Although I tend to drink carb low beers, but I fear this beer will be completely flat in a couple years after aging. Right now, good, loose syrupy feel. O: Well crafted a year out. Fresh, I’m certain this is a hop-bomb and I likely wouldn’t enjoy it - hop profile here tends to be too spicy. Nonetheless, this beer was well done. Outstanding. First glass is good...second one is over the top good. Malty carmel finish with a hoppy front. Alcohol is well hidden unlike other barleys I’ve had. Troeg’s never disappoints. Combo somewhere between nugget necter and troegenator

Bottle share thanks to Homer. Pours a murky deep brown reddish tint. Deep malt aroma, caramel, darker malts, doe toffee character. Smooth, creamy, toffee, light roast character.
