| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 24, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours red/amber, short though lasting off-white head. Slight lacing. Aroma of citrus/spice/floral, in that order, hops. Flavor is sweet caramel malt, nicely countered by mildly pungent grapefruit. Tingly on front of tongue, sweet & sour over the middle, grapefruity towards back. Medium body, dry finish. Little aftertaste of malt and citrus. Very nicely built amber ale! shigadeyo (2263), Harrison, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 22, 2008 9/22/2008: Tröegs HopBack Amber Ale has a rich amber color and a thick, deep beige head. It is clear and sparkling and overall it’s a very attractive beer. The fresh, hoppy aroma is spicy, floral, earthy and contains a bit of caramel sweetness. An adequately sweet, caramel maltiness is well-accompanied by a really fresh, dry hoppiness and mild to moderate bitterness. The beer is even more dry through the finish which just beckons me back for another drink. All of this wonderful aroma and flavor is matched with a smooth, and medium-bodied palate. Wow, I could drink bottle after bottle of this for months on end and enjoy every one! This is an excellent Amber Ale!

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 16, 2008 Draft from Pacific Standard in Brooklyn. Dark amber pour with small creamy head. Hops, caramel, toffee, and some fruitiness on the nose and palate. Nice malt presence. This is very much a tasty amber ale with plenty of hops to keep it interesting. Would love to have a sixer of this one to take home. ChuxBeer23 (10), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Sep 9, 2008 Having been impressed by other Troegs offerings, I find myself confused with this one. Prickly with a spicy, bitter bite are the nice aspects. But overall this has an overpowering maltiness that is too heavy and sweet, while having a unpleasant vegetable aftertaste.
Unbalanced and not refreshing and won’t lend itself to pair well with most foods. rugbydude05 (285), Kew Gardens, New York, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 4, 2008 12 oz bottle, Queens. Very impressed by this one- exceeded all expectations. Appearance is a dark almost cola-like color with very little foam. Hoppy aroma is noticeable along with hints of coffee and caramel and malt. Taste is also very hoppy and is sweet with just a hint of bitterness. Smooth palate despite the hop character and fills the mouth with flavor. Kind of stumbled upon this one- very drinkable and i will get it again. RunDWP (203), San Jose, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 3, 2008 Bottle. Faint malt aroma. Brown color with thick head, and lots of lacing and sheeting in the glass. The taste is a great combination of sweet and roasted malt, with some caramel and citrus, and an orange peel bitterness at the end. Great stuff. Funknmilla (577), Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA
