Commercial Description:
Troegs HopBack Amber gets its unique name and taste from the HopBack Vessel in our brewhouse. Packed full of whole flower hops, each batch circulates through the vessel, creating a fresh hoppy aroma, spicy taste and rich caramel note that defines this signature amber ale.

12oz bottle. Bottled 8/12/08. The color of this beer is amber. Brilliantly clear with a big soapy white head with plentiful lace. Aroma is biscuity, hoppy, slightly burnt toast though not unpleasant, turkey. Smells like Avery IPA or a less intense DFH 90. Taste is smooth, light, with low bitterness. A bit watery though not unpleasant really. A slight hint of caramel comes through in the taste but the sweetness in general is kept in check. Could be a good session beer. Ambers are kind of boring to me and this one didn’t really change my mind though I wouldn’t mind drinking a large amount of these. I much prefer the Nugget Nectar but this isn’t bad.

Pours a ruby brown in color that is translucent. About quarter inch of head/froth forms on the pour. Smell is a nice balance. First all malt, then deeper some hops appear. There’s also some sort of spice notes as well. Taste is very resinous. Not overly bitter, but hop flavor. Don’t know how to exactly describe it. Plenty of a malt backbone to support it. This is different than anything I’ve had of the style. Decent mouthfeel, but a tad cloying. Glad to see Troegs in Ohio.

Interesting, poured a dark copper color with a thick of white head that had nice lacing. Aroma was a mix of pine notes and some caramel notes. Flavor seemed to have a big hop bite initially and rich cloying sweetness in the finish. A rich palate. A good beer that at times seemed to be overdone. Hops seemed to mask flavors rather than complement.

I’ve been drinking this all the time lately. I love the smooth, thick, dry mouthfeel and the toasted chocolaty flavor. It’s got just a light bitter hoppy note that comes through in the finish deliciously.

(Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Dark amber colour with brief, foamy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with dark fruit, caramel, toffee and slightly rubbery hops. Malty taste with notes of dark fruit, caramel, toffee, hints of chocolate and spicy but modest bitterness in the finish. Nice, but lacking something extra.

12 ounce bottle in pint glass. Clear amber with lasting head. Citrus aroma. Mild carmael with bracing and dry bitter finish. Medium body and carbo. Sure it’s tasty, but is it an amber ale or just a copper colored IPA. You can’t just bury everything in fresh hops. I sometimes think you could fresha nd dry hop a Belgian white and it would score a 91 here. This is a good beer, but I prefer and amber to be very caramel and toasty and malty and biscuity, not an IPA with caramel coloring.

Very happy with this one. This is my idea of a session beer. Everything about this beer is simply good. Reminds me of a souped up Yuengling with better color, taste, everything, the works. Hopheads should enjoy this one, overall better brew than 60 Minute IPA

Pours a dark amber with a big tan head. Lot’s of hops and a little malt in the aroma. Nice hop flavor but not overpowering. A very drinkable beer.
