Commercial Description:
Troegs HopBack Amber gets its unique name and taste from the HopBack Vessel in our brewhouse. Packed full of whole flower hops, each batch circulates through the vessel, creating a fresh hoppy aroma, spicy taste and rich caramel note that defines this signature amber ale.

Bottle. Pours off-white, creamy, slow-disapating head. Grassy aroma. Hiints of carmel. Malty in the beginning with a strong, crisp hop finish. Very good beer. 5/3/08 - RERATE - This is what happens when you rate one of your favorite beers early. Time to revisit. This is one of my favorite "go-to" beers. It’s on draft all over. Any who, here are the notes. Pours a clear amber with deep red hues. Slightly khaki, thick foamy head. Great lacing and retention. Nose is grassy/earthy hops with a subtle bright citrus crispness. A good amount of caramel and toffee aroma. Medium watery mouth feel. A moderate caramel malt backbone with some hints of chocolate and light roast, which is accented well with a moderate earthy bitter and hop flavor. This hits you mainly towards the end and lingers well into the after. The back of the palate screams "More! More!" A very well balanced beer that lets you know it’s there without being all up in your face. One of my favorites.

(Rating #967)

Bottle. This beer pours very nicely to a medium cream head. Has citrus and flowery notes with a hint of clove and is copper-amber in color - just beautiful. Well balanced malt and hop flavors but not too hoppy which I feel overwhelms some other ales which boast the hops in their brews. Lovely mouthfeel and finishes smooth and clean. Also I prefer the lower alchol content this amber ale compared to other high hop ales. Highly recommended.

This beer pours a very dark clear amber color with a nice thick head and a nice lacing. The smell is much like a nice IPA with hops and citrus dominating the nose. So far, so good. There is a good malt and hop balance with a decent mouthfeel. There are notes of grapefruit, spices, carmel, malt and yeast. For an amber ale, this is about as good as it gets. I wish this beer were more accessible.

Nice amber colored pour with a nice cream colored head. Subtle hops aroma, with hints of yeast. Nice hops flavor, not too skunky, not too grassy, but a nice semi-sweet floral hops flavor with hints of caramel maltiness. Finish is a little strong, but very nice. A very good drink

Pour is a nice orange-ish brown. The head is good sized, and tan in color. The aroma is perfumey and hoppy. Good robust hop flavor, with a nice mellow malt flavor right about where it should be. Finish is longer, then expected but pleasant. Very good Amber.

Bottle. Pours a nice golden-amber color with a decent-sized head. Aroma is subtle hops, some malts and a slight bit of yeast. Flavor is pretty much balanced perfectly between the hops and the malt. Nice mouthfeel. Easy drinking.

Very enjoyable Ale. Beautiful amber color! Almost perfect blend of malt and hops, however I’d prefer a bit more hops and a tad less of the caramel malt flavor. I definitely would recommend this and look forward to trying it again soon.
