Smells hoppy, looks like an light amber hue. Picture perfect appearance. First sip, grapefruit flavor, nice gravity, mouthful feeling. This is an excellent beer. Will definitely be in aquisition mode when it comes to sampling the rest of this breweries product line. Excellent Amber.

it may not be the best i’ve had, but it sure is good. Nice and smooth, with nice hoppy flavor. It could be a little more bitter, but i can live without that. Give it a try if you have the chance.

UPDATED: JUN 6, 2007 Very enjoyable Ale. Beautiful amber color! Almost perfect blend of malt and hops, however I’d prefer a bit more hops and a tad less of the caramel malt flavor. I definitely would recommend this and look forward to trying it again soon.

Sixth barrel on tap. One of my favorite Amber Ales. Very nice hop flavor and finish with a nice floral aroma. However, the hops are also nicely balanced by the caramel malt character of the brew and the malts don’t take over the finish as they do in other ambers I’ve tried. I’m a fan of MANY independent brews, but I keep HopBack around all the time!

This beer is one of my new "goto’s". If I’m standing at the distributor and can’t pick between two or three beers, i’ll just grab a case of this. Can’t go wrong.

Pours a clear orange amber with 2 fingers of light foam that fell off quickly to some picturesque splotchy rings of lace. Nose is mild and cheerful with gentle citrus, floral hops and a generous, forward malt presence. The malt profile kept expanding as the beer warmed. Hearty bready biscuit, round and toasted, then honey toffee sweetness. It’s slightly whimsical how all that strong malt character gently kisses the bright grassy hops. Taste is perfection. Smooth, light, lively; moderate for all it’s malt backbone. Deeply flavorful. Succulent hops finish dry but not really too bitter with a slick mouth coating and a little pine. This is an enticing amber with plenty of character that you could happily drink all day.

This was an extra in a rescent trade. I ve had nugget nectar many times befoe and I have passed this one up on my travels. I finally tried this beer and boy I was missing out. Very great nose thats citrusy and piney, but really well balanced. a very refreshing beer for the summer months ahead.

This beer falls into that very broad category in American craft brewing known as "Amber Ale." Troegs HopBack is brewed with pilsner and Munich malts, and is hopped with both Liberty and Nugget hop varieties. It is then dry hopped, which means the brew is strained through the Hop Back or hop strainer, which is packed with whole flower Nugget hops. This gives the beer a very vibrant hop aroma, as well as adding even more hop flavors to the Liberty and Nuggets that are used in the boil. Unlike many one dimensional hop blasts, this beer has a firm, smooth, malty back bone to match up to that big hop character. HopBack Amber Ale pours to a beautiful, bright, deep amber color with a thick and creamy white head, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose is very fragrant with spicy and citric aromas, as well as some crisp, toasty malt character, with touches of estery ripe fruit. The palate is very firm, with lots of crisp, toasty malt flavor, slightly nutty malt flavor, under tones of estery fruit, and citric hop flavor. HopBack Amber Ale finishes with more malt and fruit up front, then ends with a very dry, zesty hop bite that lingers on the tongue. This is an outstanding amber ale that would match very well with a number of dishes due to the fact that it has both great malt and hop character. It comes in at 5.6% abv, allowing the drinker to enjoy a few, and a very respectable 55 IBU(bitterness units). That is plenty of hop bitterness, and it will please a hard core hop head, but is not so abusively hoppy that it could not be enjoyed by a novice to the style.

Loads of gratefruit and orange even. I really think this is a FANTASTIC beer! It is the prefect beer to bring over to a friends house to have a good time. Just bring more that one six pack...ah, make that a case.
