JavaHead Stout, first released as Scratch 15, contains a blend of locally roasted espresso and Kenyan coffee beans by St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown, PA.

This recipe is based off of our original 2005 oatmeal stout. After the boil the hot wort passes through our hopback vessel packed full of whole leaf hops and a bed of coffee beans - akin to a French press - intensifying the coffee nose and releasing hints of coffee flavor. The result is a lush oatmeal mouthfeel balanced with cocoa, roast and subtle coffee flavors.

One of the best coffee stouts I’ve had; no one element rules over the rest, though the delicious roasted coffee flavor predominates, as it should.

Really dark brown color with tan head. Aroma has sweet, chocolate malt, a bit of fudge. Taste follows with sweet malt and chocolate at first but finishes more bitter and roasty with a hint of coffee. Body is on the lighter side but feels quite smooth. Overall it’s a decent beer with good drinkability.

Pour a black with a large tan head. Aroma is actually more hoppy that coffee but the coffee is there to give this a nice richness. Flavor is a decent roasted malt and a barley there coffee. For a coffee stout this had a pretty weak coffee presence. The hops used were more pronounced than the coffee used.

Flight shared with ebone1988 at the brewery. The pour is a ruby tinted see through brown color, very light, with a thin ring of khaki head and a couple spots of lace. The aroma smells like dirty malt water. There is a light cocoa and a bit of coffee there but it’s strong malt water at best. Very disappointing. The flavor is t any better. It’s sharper malt water. The coffee just fades to a bitterness and the cocoa disappears. This thing sucks. The mouth feel is thin and watery with a sharper carbonation that I dislike very much. The aftertaste is bitter roasty malt with some light coffee. It’s not good.

Bottle. Clear dark reddish brown with a foamy tan head that lasts and laces. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee, milk chocolate, toffee, caramel, and dark fruit. Flavor is the same, sweet and roasty. Light plus bodied, smooth and roasted with a dry end.
