JavaHead Stout, first released as Scratch 15, contains a blend of locally roasted espresso and Kenyan coffee beans by St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown, PA.

This recipe is based off of our original 2005 oatmeal stout. After the boil the hot wort passes through our hopback vessel packed full of whole leaf hops and a bed of coffee beans - akin to a French press - intensifying the coffee nose and releasing hints of coffee flavor. The result is a lush oatmeal mouthfeel balanced with cocoa, roast and subtle coffee flavors.

Black color with a small head. Aroma of molasses, rum, and coffee. Quite a rummy flavor. Some tar, soy sauce, dark Munich malt. Seems like a slightly bitter dopplebock. Very light coffee.

Disappointed is the coffee taste. Not as heavy as they made it sound. Notes of vanilla and cherry even. Dark color that matches what you want with coffee styles, but not digging the lack of ummph from it. Tap and bottle

Pours black with a minimum tan head. Typical coffee and chocolate aroma. Tastes starts sweet and chocolate with a surprisingly bitter hop finish. Medium carbination with a creamy mouth feel. Alcohol content is well hidden. Good stuff.

Bottle. Jet black in colour, with a small, beige, head. New world hop and coffee bean aroma. yeasty, coffee and roasted malt flavours, with the coffee lingering for a very long time afterwards. A bit thin bodied for a stout, but pretty good overall.

Drank from a 12oz bottle, purchased at Wegman’s, thank you Katrina!! Smells of coffee beans and roasted malts. The taste is smooth with a silky complexity that leaves with a nice, well done hop flavor. Good job, a good brew!

Tap@tophops,NYC. Opaque black color with brown head. Aroma has cocoa, caramel, roasted malt. Taste is a bit sweet and ends with a somewhat dry aftertaste. Flavors of roasted malt, chocolate, ash.

BOD 1/29/15. Pours dark as a starless night. Outstanding head volume, world class lacing and retention. Rich nose of roast, coffee and dark chocolate. Light medium body with a smooth texture that is a touch oily and has creamy moments. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the middle and a fair amount in the finish. The outstanding flavor profile is intense (roast focused), complex and very well balanced. It begins with a burst of rich roast that fades into chocolate notes over a rising level of sweetness. The middle brings the coffee closer to the forefront over a mild bitterness that has distinct citric hop influence in addition to roast. Coffee is most noticeable in the finish over a receding sweetness and a lingering bitterness.

Pours black with a tan head. Roasted malt aroma with toffee, vanilla, coffee, and pine . Roasted malt flavor with coffee, brown sugar and vanilla. Finishes with roasted bitterness and pine hops. Coffee aftertaste. Reminds me if Dead Reckoning with coffee. Thanks Maxbier.
