COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
JavaHead Stout, first released as Scratch 15, contains a blend of locally roasted espresso and Kenyan coffee beans by St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown, PA.

This recipe is based off of our original 2005 oatmeal stout. After the boil the hot wort passes through our hopback vessel packed full of whole leaf hops and a bed of coffee beans - akin to a French press - intensifying the coffee nose and releasing hints of coffee flavor. The result is a lush oatmeal mouthfeel balanced with cocoa, roast and subtle coffee flavors.

Highly recommended by beer troll at local packy. Oh boy...another coffee stout. Bitter chocolate, strong coffee aroma. Some sourness to it. Too much bitterness maybe from the chocolate. Can’t really detect much else in there. Would drink again, but not go out of my way for it. Did not live up to the hype.

From a bottle. Pours black. Aroma and taste are coffee and some roasted malts.

Very strong coffee notes on the aroma, especially at first. First few sips are more heavily accented with coffee flavor. After that, the body remains full but the flavors start to blend or the coffee dominance starts to subside or overwhelm the palate and lead to an overly-complicated taste. Need to try again, and drink more slowly; this draught was on the cold end.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, best before 4/9/2016. Pours nearly opqu dark brown/black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Awesome appearance. Aromas of dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toasted oats, dark bread, herbal, pine, light pepper, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toasted oats, dark bread, herbal, pine, light pepper, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Medium piney/spicy and roast/charred bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toasted oats, dark bread, herbal, pine, and roast/charred earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good oatmeal coffee stout style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to sip on for the abv. This was more of an American stout style on the level of hoppiness; but it was not a bad thing, and it was still nicely balanced. A very enjoyable offering.

UPDATED: JAN 6, 2016 Black pour with a medium tan frothy head, good lacing. Aroma is roasted coffee with sweet notes. Body is rather light for the style. Flavor a nice balance of sweet and bitter but overall light in flavor.

Deep brown, thick medium tan head. Surprising hop nose, not much coffee evident. Immediate bittering hop taste, followed quickly by oatmeal/coffee. Mix of the two lingers in the aftertaste. Moderate carbonation.

I had it from the bottle. The aroma is coffee, chocolate, and hops. The taste is bitter coffee, chocolate, and some hops. It’s pretty dry. The mild sweetness is balanced nicely with the bitterness. This is a good one.

Stoutly black with a small tan head and nice lacing. Roasted malts and toffee shine in the aroma as the coffee takes an unexpected back seat. Flavors focus on a traditional stout platform of smooth roastiness, coffee and dark fruit. Floral and herbal hops add a nice balancing touch. Full bodied, softly carbonated mouthfeel with a long lasting finish

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured thick, black, with a big, foamy tan head and lots of lacing. Aroma of coffee, chocolate and malts. Taste of roasted coffee and malts. Enjoyable and very drinkable. Very good beer.

Black color with a small head. Aroma of molasses, rum, and coffee. Quite a rummy flavor. Some tar, soy sauce, dark Munich malt. Seems like a slightly bitter dopplebock. Very light coffee.
