COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
JavaHead Stout, first released as Scratch 15, contains a blend of locally roasted espresso and Kenyan coffee beans by St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown, PA.

This recipe is based off of our original 2005 oatmeal stout. After the boil the hot wort passes through our hopback vessel packed full of whole leaf hops and a bed of coffee beans - akin to a French press - intensifying the coffee nose and releasing hints of coffee flavor. The result is a lush oatmeal mouthfeel balanced with cocoa, roast and subtle coffee flavors.

Nice and dark pour, malt and coffee and chocolate appear on the nose. Malted and chocolate take a back seat to the espresso note. Finishes nice and full.

Bitter java stout, with a pungent pine and resin character. Lots of coffee, too, with a bitter roast to it.

Black body with little to no head. Roasted malt, coffee aroma. Tastes mostly of coffee and roasted malt. Strong bitter, roasted malt, licorice aftertaste. Medium bodied, creamy, softly carbonated palate.

Bottle. Pours a dark black with no head. Aroma is coffee, lots of dark chocolate. Flavor is dark chocolate sweetness up front with coffee bitterness to the finish. Not boozy at all. While clearly not an imperial stout, it’s very good and doesn’t have that wateriness that some weaker stouts sometimes have. Decent mouthfeel not as creamy as I’d like but understandable given that this isn’t a milk stout.

Tap at mellow mushroom. Color is perfect dark brown almost black. Nose is smoke and espresso with sugar. Full body and thick. Full coffee up front and it powers thru. A very good if not great coffee stout. ---Rated via my mouth

Pours a dark brown, deep tan head, aroma of dark roasted malt and coffee. Also something strange I cannot put my finger on. Taste smooth, sweet, slight bitterness, coffee undertones. Nice.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter. Pours a dark brown/black with a creamy foam tan head. Smells of coffee and dark chocolate. Tastes of the latter with oatmeal, vanilla, and licorice thrown into the mix. Medium bodied beer with medium carbonation. Good beer

Transfer from BA review on 4-18-12 Served in a pint glass on cask Appearance – Served a deep brown nearly black color. The head was almost non existent upon serving, with only the lightest amount of foam on the surface of the beer. Smell – The aroma is of coffee and some roasted malt and chocolate notes. There is a very light sweet sugary aroma as well, giving a somewhat sweet coffee drink smell. Taste – The taste is quite roasty malt up front. The coffee then shows up on the scene more toward the middle of the of the taste. It starts out more on the bitter side but then sweetens slightly with some more milk chocolate coffee toward the end. Towards the very end the sweetness seems to lose ground however, giving way to the more bitter detected earlier on. At the end it leaves the tongue with a malty and oaty bitterness. Mouthfeel – The body is a little above average in creaminess and quite fitting for the style. Being a cask, this beer was quite low in the carbonation level; enhancing the creaminess, but yet a bit too low and leaving something to be desired. Overall – It was an alright drinking experience, although I do remember it being better when had from a bottle (non-cask).
