JavaHead Stout, first released as Scratch 15, contains a blend of locally roasted espresso and Kenyan coffee beans by St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown, PA.

This recipe is based off of our original 2005 oatmeal stout. After the boil the hot wort passes through our hopback vessel packed full of whole leaf hops and a bed of coffee beans - akin to a French press - intensifying the coffee nose and releasing hints of coffee flavor. The result is a lush oatmeal mouthfeel balanced with cocoa, roast and subtle coffee flavors.

Nice and dark pour, malt and coffee and chocolate appear on the nose. Malted and chocolate take a back seat to the espresso note. Finishes nice and full.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Dark brown, opaque, with a decent and lacy mocha head. Rich coffee nose, roasted malt, some dark chocolate and faint ash. Intense coffee flavors, highly roasted malts, grassy hops, medium bitterness, faint anise notes and some alcohol. Medium bodied, quite flavorful, somewhat creamy but a bit solvent. Cool

Very enjoyable stout! On tasting tour at Troegs. Dark brown and small head appearance. Roasted malt gives tastes of chocolate and coffee. Minimal hop presence, hearty but not overbearing mouthfeel.

Bottle in trade as an extra. Big thanks! Pours black with a two finger head that is brown looks super creamy and rich. Sweet aroma of dark fruits, a little booze, a little chocolate, and coffee that is somewhat subdued for the name. Flavor follows with earthy coffee though, then comes sweet chocolate covered fruits, some nice roasted grains in the finish. Still light on the coffee for a brew called Java Head, but very nice nonetheless. Lingering sweetness left on the palate with the roast. Mouthfeel is medium heavy and pretty rich for a non-impy stout. Nice beer overall and something I could see being a nice go-to for a rich beer on a week night.

Bottle to Shaker Glass. Pour very dark, light barely shines through. Nice coffee/chocolate aroma. Slightly hoppy taste. Bittersweet finish. Nice.

Black with thin tan head. Hint of malt sweet aroma. Full mouth feel and sharp roast bite. Malt provides nice balance and body. Coffee offers some astringency and lingering flavor.

This beer pours deep black with a khaki head, smells of coffee from when the bottle is opened, other things on the nose include some chocolate. The taste is some dark chocolate first then followed by the coffee which is great. This beer is also pretty thick

You get the coffee one would expect from this beer, but for a stout brewed with coffee beans, this is surprisingly hop forward. Pine and grass hops poke through the coffee notes that overlay the beer. Not much hop bitterness, but some expected coffee/roasty bitterness. Interesting beer, I like it.

Bottle: Deep brown body with a slightly cream head that’s tinted both tan & gray. Aroma has notes of oily coffee beans, roast, faint smoke, & a touch of chocolate malt. There’s a little creamy sweetness to back it up. Taste has notes of bitter coffee beans, borderline stale with lighter hints of cream, smoke, & roasted barley. Mouth feel could be a bit thicker. Finishes with a good balance of bitter & sweet. Pretty good coffee stout.
