Commercial Description:
JavaHead Stout, first released as Scratch 15, contains a blend of locally roasted espresso and Kenyan coffee beans by St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown, PA.

This recipe is based off of our original 2005 oatmeal stout. After the boil the hot wort passes through our hopback vessel packed full of whole leaf hops and a bed of coffee beans - akin to a French press - intensifying the coffee nose and releasing hints of coffee flavor. The result is a lush oatmeal mouthfeel balanced with cocoa, roast and subtle coffee flavors.

Pours black, faint tan head. Aroma is gently of coffee and a bit of chocolate, but also quite a bit of a doughy yeasty note. Flavor matches, very surprised at the level of yeast flavor here. Honestly would not have pegged this as a coffee stout - I have had far more intense coffee notes from many stouts that never saw a drop of the beans. Rather light bodied too for a 7.5% beer. Faint citrus hops on the finish barely there, but detectable. Not bad, just not what I was expecting. Sort of a middling stout.

Bomber from coldbrewky for beeeer tasting night. Pours a dark brown with a tan color head. The most captivating thing about this beer was the complete honeycomb pattern that materialized from the frothy head. Quite delightful indeed. As for the beer itself the aroma was very subdued and the flavor almost featured more hops than coffee in my opinion. It is creamy and smooth however, but I just expected more coffee bean punch from something labeled Java Head.

Bomber. Nose of chocolate, coffee, citric hops, not really roasty but some smooth mocha-y and vanilla powder. Pleasant. Pitch pour with a large creamy, rocky tan head. Taste is dry and lightly sour, rounded and smooth feel, low carbonation, coffee et al are low and restrained. Light body, long dry aftertaste, lightly beany but again, zero trace of roast. There’s some nice complexity here in a style not always known for it, but I much prefer a different direction (to the other side of the spectrum).

Poured pitch black from a 22oz bottle. Aroma of coffee with chocolate notes. And frothy, tan head. A light sweetness with a soft carbonation. Nice brew.

Sampled at Barrios’ Sausage Fest 2010! Pours a great near black with decent brown head. Nose is a little on the weak side of old coffee. Flavor is roasty, cocoa, coffee. A little astringent, but still a tasty beer. Love the label art.

Pours a lacing tan head with a dark brown body. Aromas of roasted, dark bread flavors with a hint of coffee. Flavors of toasted bread, molasses, old coffee that is faint. Finish is sticky and bitter.

dark pour with a cream soda head. Thin and sour. Surprise. But not a good one. It’s really astringent old coffee in flavor. Disappointment.

Bottle on 10/04/2009. Dark black body with a large rocky tan head. Sweet roast, chocolate, caramel and coffee aroma with a bit of floral and resiny notes. Sweet chocolate, roast and vanilla flavor with coffee and a bit of floral hop bitterness. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation.

Draught at Ginger Man, NYC
Black color, creamy head. Light aroma but deep. Roasted malt flavor, and caramel. Not bad.
