COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
JavaHead Stout, first released as Scratch 15, contains a blend of locally roasted espresso and Kenyan coffee beans by St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown, PA.

This recipe is based off of our original 2005 oatmeal stout. After the boil the hot wort passes through our hopback vessel packed full of whole leaf hops and a bed of coffee beans - akin to a French press - intensifying the coffee nose and releasing hints of coffee flavor. The result is a lush oatmeal mouthfeel balanced with cocoa, roast and subtle coffee flavors.

Coffee, chocolate, and roast in the aroma. Bittersweet flavor with coffee, chocolate, and more hop bitterness than I expected. More coffee bitterness in the finish. Not exactly what I expected, but really good.

From 355 ml bottle courtesy of Maria and Vasilis. Thanks guys! Dark brown almost black color with beige brown head. Roasted malty aroma, milk chocolate, cocoa, light coffee, some fruity notes. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma with dark chocolate addition. Medium to full oily silky body with soft carbonation.

Bottle, thanks Christina! Roasted malt aroma with notes of chocolate, roasted nuts and some coffee. Pours extremely dark brown with half a finger of light brown head with excellent retention and good lacing. Starts with nice roasted malt and chocolate flavors smoothed out nicely by the oatmeal that gives a creamy mouthfeel. Finishes dry with some nutty flavors, but with big coffee coming through at the very end to linger on the palate. Surprisingly good overall for a coffee stout, however the finish was still a bit harsh in the coffee department.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Julio’s Liquors. Aroma is roasted malts with relatively subtle chocolate, dark fruit, oats. Maybe the faintest hint of coffee, but honestly not getting it. Appearance is dark, dark brown. Reddish-brown seen at the bottom with light source behind it. One stream of sparkle noted at the edge of the glass. Finger-width foamy light brown head with fair retention and nice lacing. Taste is moderately rich roasted malt with dark fruit and late espresso/coffee bitter taste. Palate is medium bodied with thick, creamy texture, average carbonation with dry, bitter finish as above. Overall, this is good but doesn’t stand out in any way. Aroma and taste are pretty restrained and, given that it’s got Java in the name, you’d think there’d be strong coffee flavor but there wasn’t. OK. Nothing I’d turn down but better offerings out there.

Pours black with plenty of head. Slightly soapy aroma but a deep rich creamy taste and a hint of espresso tang. Nuts and some chocolate. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A very nice & roasty stout that is lovely on the palate & a pleasure to look at! Pours black w/ a mocha head & good lacing. The aroma is of subtle roast & chocolate. The taste is quite roasty up front & finishes w/ some chocolate notes & exceptionally smooth. Very good stout!

Troegs spares no expense with this delightful beer that has it all! I was so impressed with the tanish head that created awesome lacing, and I poured it from a bottle. I would love to have it on tap at the brewery! The oatmeal gives it the fluffy head and the chewy mouthfeel. It’s also super roasty and bitter with the combo of malt, chocolate, and coffee. Definitely grab this one on a cold, winter’s night. Cheers!

Very strong coffee notes on the aroma, especially at first. First few sips are more heavily accented with coffee flavor. After that, the body remains full but the flavors start to blend or the coffee dominance starts to subside or overwhelm the palate and lead to an overly-complicated taste. Need to try again, and drink more slowly; this draught was on the cold end.
