COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Naked Elf takes a hard look at the less-is-more theory. Ever since we developed The Mad Elf, we’ve speculated what it would taste like without the cherries and honey. So what lies beneath the fruit? Naked Elf is unfiltered, so the spicy yeast taste is more prominent in this strong, hazy orange ale. The combination of the Pilsner, and Vienna malts give a lot of body and minimal sweetness, but Naked Elf has a dry finish. Finally, the heat of the alcohol makes its presence known in the finish. The Naked Elf’s finest quality is the delicate balancing act between a lively yeast kick and a slight alcohol note that lingers in the back of the mouth—constantly reminding us not to overindulge in this complex, warming elixir.

Draft at McGrath’s in Harrisburg. Mostly clear amber and ruby orange color with some shades of color that are close to pink. Sweet candy sugar nose, notes of red apple skins and white grapes. Tingly and effervescent on the tongue, sharp with medium to heavy sweetness, but just under the level of cloying. Light body, with a mild spice flavor, clean all around, low yeast presence. I’m not so big on tripels these days, but this one is tasty enough, with more of a fruit cocktail hop flavor than most, but I would like to see some more dryness and less sweetness. Finishes with a pineapple and white grape note.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye, listed as Scratch 21-2009. This is a tripel?! Pours with a hazy amber with a fading off-white head (does that sound like a tripel to you?). Aroma of apple, spice, banana, and vanilla. Taste is apples and a myriad of other fruits. Medium carbonation.

Pours copper with a thin white ring of bubbles. Smells fruity and spicy with some dry malty presence. Tastes sweet and breaddy with some nice spicy elements as the beer warms. A definite keeper.

Draft at the Drafting Room Exton. HAzy dark straw pour with 1-finger off-white head. Big aromas of banana, yeasty Bazooka gum, spicy florals, and some funky malt. The flavor is on the sweet side, with a lot of banana, coriander, orange zest, bubblegum, and floral spices. This one could be a banana lambic! It also gains some bier de gard elements and saisony funky floral spiciness as it warms. Wonderfully complex and extremely smooth, with no heat at all! Troeg’s has another winner on their hands. Oh, and by the way, this is an example of how the cherries actually may have held this wonderful beer back a little!
