roborb (58), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Apr 14, 2009 Bottle thanks to drgonzo3705, thanks Paul! Pours a murky amber color with a small lasting 1 finger head. I could pick up citrus, pine and a lot of malt. This was a classic amber ale on steroids. I enjoyed the hop profile up front but I felt that the malts overpowered the beer. I would love to try this one fresh as it has a lot of potential. Despite the aforementioned problem for me I had no problem finishing my glass. I will re-rate when I get a fresh bottle next year. Hophead22 (1056), Redlands, by way of Wisconsin,, California, USA Apr 14, 2009 12oz bottle from sirpsycho, thanks Mark. My 700th rate and #704 for the beer, should have planned this out, damn.
Amber/orange pour with a white sticky head. Citrus hop aroma, very nice. Light hop flavor, not what I expected, not really any comparison to Pliny. billk (300), Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, USA Apr 14, 2009 bottle 12 oz. I’m not an amber fan but had to try this. Big hop aromas in the nose with amber malt background. Flavor is a full bodied explosion of resinous hops and cooked amber malts up front followed by an out of place bittering hops taste and burn. The finish went rather quickly into a thin and watery mouthfeel with the bittering hops lingering. I felt this brew was concocted by a lab tech looking for a bang by science rather than quality.
The two hearted ale which we also got a 6er of that day, although only into medium bodied, was much more enjoyable to drink. I think Troegs is a second rate brewer. Elwood (647), Leesburg, Virginia, USA Apr 14, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy amber with a small, fluffy, off white head. A massive pine and citrus punch in the nose! Lots of orange and touch of grass too. Some malt sweetness lingers in the back of the nose. Medium carbonation with a pretty rich mouthfeel. Pine, citrus, peach, spice, great malt sweetness, and most importantly a great balance between the hops and malt on the palate. Medium finish with some lingering malt sweetness and spicy hops. Spotty lacing all the way down the glass. This was a really enjoyable brew! bierkoning (5985), La Tropica, Netherlands Apr 14, 2009 Bottle (december 2005) from TheEpeiist. Thanks! Orange color. Tangerine, blackcurrant and a hint of hopoil in the aroma. Medium bodied. malty sweet earthy hopbitter flavor with tangerine and blackcurrant. Longish hopbitter aftertaste. Good balance. Very nice beer. mjs (1445), Helsinki, Finland Apr 13, 2009 (Bottle at Oliver Twist, Stockholm, on 2009-04-12) Darkish amber and lightly hazy. Hops, grass and malts in aroma. Dense, white and medium sized head. Medium bodied and dry palate with medium carbonation. Malts, bitterness, lightly toffee, sweetness, lot of hops and grass in taste. Malts, hops and bitterness in aftertaste. joekinty (263), rockledge, Florida, USA Apr 12, 2009 Tried on tap in Kent Ohio nice hop aroma with a good malt balance with a great finish would drink this one daily if I were able to get it Volgon (2487), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Apr 11, 2009 Bomber: Pours a clear dark orange with a small white head, nose has floral hops and oranges, starts and ends very bitter with a fruity aftertaste, medium bodied with a crisp mouthfeel and ample carbonation.
