Squeeze those hops for all they’re worth and prepare to pucker up: Tröegs’ newest single batch brew, Nugget Nectar Ale, will take hopheads to nirvana with a heady collection of Nugget, Warrior and Tomahawk hops. Starting with the same base ingredients of our flagship HopBack Amber Ale, Nugget Nectar intensifies the malt and hop flavors to create an explosive hop experience.

12oz bottle. Poured a deeper, see through, orangish color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of pine, oranges, and citrus. I’m also getting a little breadiness. Tastes of oranges, caramel, pine, citrus, and a little fruity. Not overly bitter and has a light malty balance. Alcohol content hidden.

This beer is absolutely brilliantly clear, and I mean brilliant. It is a deep copper color with reddish over-tones. The head is initially two-fingers thick, but seems to disappear to a thin layer fairly quickly, it is a pale tan color. The aroma is raw and hoppy, which is quite apparent even as I am pouring this beer into my glass. Aromatic notes of sweet grapefruit, lychee, apricot are up front, but there is a raw, grassy, almost herbal, pine-like note here that plays a supporting role to all of the sweet fruit-hop notes.

The taste is sharp and bitter from the get go. Sharp herbal notes hit the tongue as the beer becomes lightly astringent, and ends with a tongue flagellating bitterness that lingers on for quite some time. There are lots of fruity hop notes here as well, a smooth lychee, almost apricot note seems to lead, but ample notes of sweet citrus fruit are also found here. This beer is missing a lot of that raw, grassy hop character that one would expect in a beer like this, but I have a feeling a lot of that was filtered out. There is just enough malt here to give a touch of sweetness, which certainly helps with the fruit notes. This beer is quite light feeling and goes down easily, it is almost on the thin side, but does manage to live up to the hop character.

I can’t help but feel that a lot of the life has been filtered out of this beer (or perhaps it was never here to begin with). Don’t get me wrong it is tasty, but it is missing a lot of complexity, even for a hop bomb, that would make this beer quite a bit better. Luckily, I can be a hop head, so this beer is still quite enjoyable.

Bottle. Wow. More like a really drinkable IIPA than an IPA or an imp. amber. This is one great brew. Hops from start to finish w/ very little malt to drag you down.

UPDATED: MAY 14, 2007 It has a powerful aroma and a lovely fruity taste which smacks almost of peach laden with an almost spicy array of hops and the usual pine nutty flavors I detect from the Troegs line of beers. I enjoyed this one even if it tended to linger a bit too long.

Pours orangish-amber with a one-finger white head. Sweet hop aroma. Incredibly balanced flavor, with those sweet hops being joined by citrus and pine against a big malt background. Excellent, unique IPA.

Definately a great IPA, quite the kick on this one, too. However, you can kind of taste the alcohol in this one, aroma is heavily hopped, palate is not quite as robust as I would prefer, but still, the taste is sticky and thick. A good one, nice seasonal.

UPDATED: MAR 3, 2007 2005 Bottle. Wow, what an impact on flavor here! The beer place (Pletchers) guys told me it was like a punch to the face. I have to agree. Full Aroma, Apperance is lite. Great flavor but the palate doesn’t stick as well as I would expect. Very fruity aroma that doesn’t impact the beer as much, something that I was pleased with. Almost an IIPA. The Alcohol feels much more then 7.5%, more like 9.5%. Great ale. Highly recommended, too bad they don’t brew it year round. Cheers!

UPDATED: MAR 4, 2007 Bottle courtesy of CMUBEERMAN. I think I have another on the way from hopdog also. Brilliant copper amber with decent white head. Appears oily as it coats the glass, but doesn’t leave any lacing. Aroma is citrus sticky sweet malt and pine resin. Flavor again lots of pine resin up front, with citrus (grapefruit and orange zest), and plenty of caramel for balance. Very sticky mouthfeel. Long lingering hop bitterness.

UPDATED: FEB 1, 2008 Bottle. I have had Troegs beers before, but this site peaked my interest. So I picked up a six and boy was I glad that I did. Pours reddish amber with a nice lacing white head. Nice fruity hop aroma. Even though this is listed as an IPA, the bottle says it’s an Imperial amber which I think is a perfect description. Flavor is dominated by the fruity hop profile, but the malt backbone of an amber on steroids makes this one unique...caramel, tea, british pale malts. Finishes sweet, bitter, with some slight piney notes. Nice job by those two brothers in Harrisburg. Being an IPA fan, this may share space with Bells Two Hearted and 3f Alpha King in my session beer fridge.
RERATE 1-31-08. I was able to get a fresh draft (2 weeks old) of this and what a difference. The aroma is stellar, and freshness of the hops makes this a stellar malty IPA. This gets a one point improvement in overall and aroma.

(bottle - 12 oz) Clear orange color with a thin film of soapy white head. Aroma is full of hops. Lots and lots of hops. Very peppery and slightly sweet with some floral notes. Taste begins with a smooth and lightly sweet hop taste. The middle is absolutely loaded with hops and peppery flavors. Extremely tasty with a nice and bitter hoppy finish. Medium-bodied and loaded with flavor.
